The wind brushed across her face, she felt the presence of the trees, birds, flowers, soldiers, all through sound, a skill seldom known. In blindness she had had her life to perfect her hearing. Inspired by stories of the Master Spy, the Female Warrior, she saw the unseen through sound.
The village was all women, most of the youngest were deformed. Without spiritual energy passed down through men, they were the strongest workers, physically able to dominate anything. But no spiritual energy came at a price, no balance. The Versalese didn't care what became of them though. Free labor was all that mattered to them. They separated the children at birth. They were given to new parents. The boys were all killed, taken away into the forest somewhere and then... Well she didn't want to think about what happened next. The Versalese would pay, that was her only thought. This wasn't their land, this was Herklas! Her people's home, the land of the purple eyed, not the amber eyed scum of the East.
She threw a rock and hit a target on a tree dead on. She heard it splinter and grinned. Soon they would be like her, blind, as they lost sight to all they had gained.
