Viv was beginning to really worry. Not only was Ari in the hospital not getting any better, now she couldn't get a hold of Mia. She texted and called and she received no response. So many thoughts went through her head but she kept coming back to one person; the client Mia mentioned.

If he was unnerving enough for her to tell all the girls, maybe she felt in danger. Why didn't they ask her anything further, why didn't they caution her?

Viv called Mia's company and an answering service picked up. She asked for Mia to be paged and also to have the manager call her back. Mia had never ever disappeared like that. It may have taken her a few hours, but not the whole day to respond to a text.

Now it was Saturday night, a whole day since they last said their goodbyes and Mia had not responded to one text or phone call.  Viv was getting into bed when a text came in and she quickly grabbed the phone, it was Mia!

"Hey, I'm fine, long story, don't worry, I'm sorry I can't call back. I will see you soon." Viv was instantaneously relieved but also incredibly suspicious. This didn't sound like Mia, why would she not call back? In fact, Mia defaulted to phone calls because texts took too long for her.

Viv typed out a bunch of messages but deleted them all. Finally she responded with something she knew Mia would not ignore and call back if she could.

"Hey, thanks for letting me know! Sorry I've been on your case, I just wanted to update you about Ari...can you call me?" Viv waited sitting in her bed wiggling. The message was delivered and read and a response was being typed, and then it stopped. Then it started again and then stopped. Finally a text came through, "what's wrong?"

There it was, Viv knew it was not her, she would never respond this way, especially about Ari. She pondered what to write back and also what to do now that she knew Mia's phone was with someone else. She decided to end this exchange and wrote. "Nothing bad, just wanted to chat. Love you girl, chat soon!"

Viv laid down in bed, eyes wide open, trying to figure out what to do about her now missing friend.

Mia awoke while it was still dark outside, she looked at the clock on the wall, it said 5:35. It took her a second to figure out where she was and what time it was. She was incredibly thirsty and found the water that she ordered standing on her bedside table.

Her body felt sore and tired. Her head felt like it weighed a thousand pounds and her feet hurt when she got out of bed. She had fallen asleep right after getting to the room and slept until 5:30 the next morning.

She opened her balcony doors and let in a warm delicious breeze. She saw the ocean, beautifully glistening in the light of an almost rising sun. She thought that since it's so early, she would take a shower and go down to the beach and put her feet in the water; she loved the ocean.

The sand felt like soft butter on her feet. She walked up to the edge of the water and warm waves washed her feet. She stood there with her eyes closed, breathing in the tropical morning air.

She wondered why she didn't take more vacation time. The truth was, she worked almost non stop. She took some time off here and there but never enough to fully unplug and recharge.

Her business demanded her attention at all times, she could never put her phone away or be far away from a laptop. Besides the unease she felt about her friends and family probably trying to figure out where she was, she was glad her cell phone was missing.
