Upon return to New York, Kirill insisted on Mia staying with him. He said that after what happened it was a non negotiable and he didn't know the source of the danger yet. He was still weak but at the same time he couldn't sit back and let whatever happened pass him by.

He left home early and came home late and they had an agreement that she would go back to work and continue working with all the clients she had before him. He begrudgingly agreed knowing he couldn't keep her locked up in a gilded cage.

Everything quieted down and they got into a groove of living together, learning what each one liked and didn't. Mia met up with Carly and Viv for a coffee one Wednesday afternoon, about two months into her new life with him.

Both Viv and Carly had not met Kirill yet and neither one liked him but tried to understand and respect her choice. Carly was more open to Mia's new relationship since her and Ari had grown close while he was recovering and she was happy that Ari seemed to now associate Mia with that fateful night. Carly had worked hard for him to come to the conclusion that if Mia hadn't left him at the event and went off to socialize, he would have been safe. Ari was still not back to work but recovering at home at his parent's house since he had to have reconstructive nose and teeth surgery.

Mia had come to visit him a few times but noticed a definite coldness between them that was never there before. She didn't think much of it but was dedicated to making sure her colleague was well taken care of. She sent care packages and put him in touch with one of her dad's best friends who was an excellent plastic surgeon and had a 6 months waiting list. Thanks to that connection, Ari's surgery date was sped up significantly.

"So you know the crazy motherfucker at my job, the guy who shits on everyone's head to make sure we all produce our numbers and not have families or a life?" Viv swore like a sailor but was masterful with her words.

"Anyway, joke's on him because he's six feet underground now. Apparently he overdosed on some blow laced with some fucked up shit like fentanyl or whatever the fuck they put in there. He was a huge coke head and we all knew that but we didn't know we would have to send his drug dealer a thank you basket." She laughed and Carly only smiled at the story since she already heard it.

"Wow, damn, he did coke?" Mia asked surprised. She never understood why people who had high level jobs did drugs. She thought drugs were just for junkies on the street.

"Pfffft fuck yeah! He was a coke head for yearssss. I guess something changed and he got a bad batch or something." Viv finished shrugging and biting her croissant.

Mia was lost in thought while the girls chatted. Kirill had explained to her that they controlled all cocaine that was distributed in the Tristate area at the very least and mostly all throughout the east coast.

He took great pride in bringing the best product on the market and had quality control at many steps of distribution. That is how he was able to charge so much for it and jack up the price since taking over. He said they had different tiers and he worked hard at expanding the top tier, the coke that went into the hands of precisely the people that Viv was talking about.

Mia wondered if he knew that someone had been tampering with what he worked hard at keeping pure.

Over the last two months, involuntarily but also eagerly, she got more involved in what he did. She diligently listened to what he told her and she asked the right questions. She didn't admit to herself that she liked what he did and how much money and danger was attached to it.

Little by little she let herself give him advice about things she had no previous experience with and she followed up to see if he had followed it and what the result was. She was falling deeper and deeper into the mafia world but refused to be truthful with herself.
