Briefing room

"As I informed you of, there will be a new member of the team transfering from the-"

"-What? Transfering? Who? Here? Why didn't I know about this?" Jake utterd clearly confused.

"We all got an email last week, Jake" Amy said in a kind of 'duh' voice.

"Yeah well, you...whatever" He said giving up on a comeback, "so who is this guy -or girl, I don't discriminate to gender, women are just as capable to do police work as any man" Jake said thinking about all the awesome women working on the Police force.

"Team, say hello to Derek Hale" Holt announced as Derek walked in -Jake freezing in place, heartbeat practically stopping before skyrocketing at the name.

"Damn" Gina dragged the word out sounding impressed

Derek walked up to the podium to greet Holt but—
"Sourwolf..." Stiles breathed before breaking into an hysterical laughter. Everyone turned their eyes to him and while seemingly Derek had no special reaction, on the inside he was having the time of his life with the worst case of guilt he has had since Boyd. The werewolf could smell his chemosignals clearly; shock, anger, betrayal, disbelief and sadness.

The shock he got, the anger he understood, the betrayal he was highly sorry for, the disbelief- although likely not on the same level- he could feel himself. Still the one that hurt the most were the sadness -he had made Stiles sad, he didn't deserve that, he didn't deserve to feel sad ever again, Beacon Hills had given him enough for a few lifetimes.

"Something wrong, Peralta?" Holt asked In a slightly confused tone as many others gave him greatly confused looks. Many whispering things such as 'what's happening?', 'the hell is wrong with him?', 'Uhh?' and at last the the accepting word with the not so accepting tone 'Okay?'.

"I—I'm so—rry— 's jus- just" Jake said being cut off by his own laughter, he was now crying while laughing so hard they all thought he would explode before he just stopped and stared right at Derek looking completely miserable the tears on his face drying while his eyes were still glossy.

Derek wanted so very much to look away but could not bring himself to, he looked him straight in the eyes and wanted to cry. He had been scared to see him again but very much wanted to as once he had made him feel happy and loved, like he deserved the kindness... but he didn't—he didn't deserve it—he left—he had left, going M.I.A for a year before just deciding he was too much of a coward to go back, that he couldn't do it. And looking at him now he was in hell, he had done this, he had made him break into borderline hysterical laughter before he had just ended it with a terribly pained and totally miserable look in his direction.

It hurt, it hurt to an extreme level, he had hurt the person he cared the most about in the entire universe, the one who had pieced him together without treating him like he was going to break but still held him together whenever he was close to crumbling again. He had been his lifeline -his everything.

"I need some air" Stiles had said as he left the room

That hurt

They were detectives—with the exception of Gina, and far from stupid, they could easily piece together the fact that they knew each other, that much was obvious

What they didn't know was what would cause such a reaction
