*Two years later*
"Oh my God, Everett, you're still not up?!" I hear my sister cry as she flings open the door to my room. "Ev, we have like 20 minutes before the first bell rings! Get up, let's go!"
I groan as I drag myself out of bed. It's not like it matters if I'm late or not, I mean, it's senior year, the teachers have to be expecting this. I pull on the first tee-shirt I see, a black v-neck, and some black skinny jeans before grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out the door. I get into the car, only to hear Becca mumble a "finally" and decide to tease her a bit.
"What was that?" I say with a smirk on my face.
"Nothing, nothing at all, let's go." she replies impatiently, gesturing for me to start up the car. "You know you're in an awfully good mood today," she states, like I was incapable of being happy.
"Well, I realized that I only have one year left in this hell hole, and then I can finally be on my own." I state, realizing that my attempted humor was about to take a dark turn.
"We are already on our own... no thanks to our dearest Auntie Lisa" she says bitterly. I chuckle for a second, but the laughter is followed by a moment of silence. Becca finally breaks the silence with a question that I feel unable to answer.
"You aren't going to leave me too, right?" Of course I would never leave her, at least emotionally... but I have always dreamed of being on my own, being able to drive across the country and not have to worry about anyone but myself.
"No... I could never leave you." I say hesitantly. It seems to be enough as she mumbles a dejected, "Good."
I have never been good at sharing my feelings, and even though the conversation was over, I regretted saying anything at all. I felt as if I'd made a promise to her that I wouldn't be able to keep. It was all so messed up.
The rest of the car ride was silent, and you could tell that we were both thinking. While Becca was probably thinking about how screwed up her life had become since the incident, I was thinking about howas much as we both tried to forget it, it was always going to be a part of our past. We were both drawn out of our thoughts as we pulled into the school parking lot. I tried, awkwardly, to break the silence.
"Are you ready for day number one of your junior year?"
"So ready." She replied sarcastically, getting out of the car, while I did the same. We started walking towards our first classes, but I suddenly couldn't seem to move.
The girl ahead of us, well... she was breathtaking. In the distance, I could hear my sister ask if I was also ready for this year. But when I gave the same response of "So ready," there wasn't a hint of sarcasm in my voice. I was ready. Ready to meet this mystery girl who had made me, literally, stop in my tracks.
