Everett didn't get home until midnight. MIDNIGHT. I was worried sick! I mean no text, no call, nothing! By the time he finally walks through the door, I'm almost asleep in the armchair, curled up with a book in front of me. I jump up and storm towards him. "Where have you been, Mister? I have been waiting for--wait... why are you smiling?"
He doesn't seem phased at all by my outburst. In fact, he has this stupid grin on his face... "Hello? Ev?" I wave my hand in front of his face.
"What? Oh..." he laughs "Uh... sorry Becca, I guess I just lost track of time. Please forgive me?," he replies, giving me those darned puppy dog eyes, and I break.
"Okay Ev, wanna tell me what happened at Devin's house then?" I ask accusingly.
"Well Becca, I'm afraid all I can say is that I had a marvelous time," he smirks. At this point I know that something happened, but he is also taking the opportunity to mess with me, so I play along.
"Oh, Ev, of course it's okay, I trust that everything that happened went along with her and her boyfriend's wishes, now can I get you some homemade pie?" I ask in the sweetest voice possible, so he knows that I mean no part of what I said. The mention of food snaps him out of the act.
"Wait, do we actually have pie?" he asks hopefully.
"No stupid, Now seriously, tell me what happened!" I tell him.
"I can't," he says, "I'm sorry but I really can't say very much, but trust me, when everything is worked out, you will be the first to know." He can tell that I am getting frustrated with him and he grabs me by the shoulders. "Trust me Becca, I tell you everything, and just because you don't know now doesn't mean you will never know." I give him puppy dog eyes, hoping they will have the same effect. They don't. He just lets go of my shoulders and starts to head to his room.
"Okay, okay," I sigh stopping him, "but about the boyfriend... I just don't really think it's a good idea for you to go after a girl with a boyfriend because ultimately it could lead to either you getting hurt or her getting hurt by both of you and I just really don't like seeing you sad and---"
"Becca, it's okay, Brayden and her are just friends," he says, cutting me off. I must look a little too excited about this because he continues on to say, "Wait, you like him, don't you?" I blush and turn away.
"No, whatever would give you that idea?" Ugh, I'm such a horrible liar.
"Ooooo Rebecca likes a boy," he says in a sing-songy voice.
"Shut up!" I yell, having no better response, "Now... come on, we should get some sleep, you know, we have to get up for school tomorrow," I say, trying my best to change the subject while heading to my bedroom.
"Okay, sweet dreams of Braaaaayyyden," He yells after me, dragging out the name. I ignore him and fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, secretly hoping that I do dream of him.
**The next day at school**
Everett and I head to what has become our usual lunch table with Devin and Brayden. "Everett! I saved you a seat!" Devin calls out as we reach the table. Hmm... That's a little strange, but I brush it off. I sit down in an empty seat that is conveniently is next to Brayden. Devin and Everett seem to be taking every opportunity to touch hands or have private conversations, and by the time lunch is almost over Brayden has noticed, too.
"Hey, Rebecca, am I the only one who thinks that this," he gestures toward Devin and Everett, " is a little weird?"
"Oh thank goodness, I thought I was the only one!" I reply, "It's like they went from 0 to 80 in one night!"
"Wait, why 80 and not 100?" he says laughing.
"Well, I mean, they aren't actually together," I say.
"As far as we know," he replies with a chuckle.
"Well I mean, up until yesterday I thought she had a boyfriend, so if they were already dating I would be a little confused," I say laughing.
"Wait, really? Who?" he asks. I immediately realize my mistake... That probably was not the right thing to say...
"Oh, umm, I mean, no one... I just meant that I thought that maybe she was interested in someone else and... oh who am I kidding, I thought you two were dating," I blurt out.
"Ooohhhh," he says, "I guess that makes sense, I mean we are together a lot, but don't worry, we are just friends. I have known her forever."
"What? Me? Worried? That's silly, what would I have to be worried about?" I ask, frantically trying to save myself. "I mean it's not like I like you or anything." Ugh! Every time I'm around him I forget how to talk or act or anything! What is with me?
"Oh no, don't worry, I didn't think that. You were just worried about Everett, right?" he replies.
"Oh, right, of course!" I say. Well that did not go as planned.
