"I... uh... well... let's see..." Becca fumbles for words while I waited for a reply. "Yeah... yeah, I talked to her. Um... her name is Devin, She said 'Hi, my name is Devin and I love your skirt' and I said 'Thanks! I got it on sale! And let's see... what else?" She said nervously. "Oh... um... well... I think she has a boyfriend."

"A boyfriend?" I ask, feeling a lump form in my throat. I can't let my emotions show. "That's cool.. it's fine, I mean I didn't really like her anyway, Like... I've never even talked to her."

"You're lying," she accuses.

"I'm not lying, I'm fine, I swear."

"Who are you trying to convince? Me or you?"

"Just drop it, okay?" The lump in my throat is becoming more prominent and I could feel tears stinging the corners of my eyes. I run my fingers through my hair and try to walk away, but Becca grabs my arms, desperate for me to show my emotions.

"Ev... It's okay to admit that you like her."

"I don't like her," I practically shout. "Just drop it. Please. Look, I gotta go, I'm gonna be late for chem," I tell her, taking a deep breath.

"Fine, whatever." Becca says as I walk away.

God, this sucks. This girl is already getting in my head and I barely know her name, not to mention the fact that she has a boyfriend. I'm deep in thought as I walk into the chemistry room. I scan the room for an empty seat and am pulled out of my thoughts when I realize the only open seat is next to Devin. Reluctantly, I walk over to the desk and sit down.

Okay, play it cool Everett... she's nothing special, you just need to get through this hour.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts again by a voice. "Hi, my name is Devin, it looks like you're gonna be my lab partner this quarter! It's nice to meet you." Shit... not only is she pretty, but she's nice too.

"Hi, uh... I'm Everett. It's nice to meet you too."

"Please tell me that you're good at science, because it really isn't my strong suit. I prefer the arts. You know, band, drama, choir, stuff like that." Do I tell her that I'm good at science? I mean, I could end up being her "hero" but I could also end up as her nerdy friend...

"Yeah, I mean, I got like a B in biology, so I guess I'm decent at it?"

"Oh thank God, I'll be lucky if I get a C. I swear I'm not an idiot, I just struggle a lot with science... and math. Math is even worse." She says with a slight laugh in her voice.

"Well, at risk of sounding like a nerd, maybe you'd wanna study after school sometime?"

Oh my God, what are you doing, hitting on a girl who already has a boyfriend?

Sometimes I feel like my conscience needs to shut up. But as I am going through this internal war, I see Devin blush.

"I'd love to." She says. Is she actually blushing? No... she couldn't be, she's in a relationship. It has to be my imagination. My thoughts are interrupted by our new teacher, Mr. Andrew.

"Why hello there class. I'm so sorry to keep you waiting, I was just setting up today's lab." He says while the class turns into a choir of groans.

"Now, now, I think you are gonna like this lab, it involves candy. And yes, you do get to eat it at the end."

"Yippee, work in exchange for a few pieces of candy. What a deal." Devin says sarcastically. I break out into laughter, but regret it when we are called out by Mr. Andrew.

"What is so funny? Is candy really that amusing to you guys?"

We cover our laughs up with a cough and put our hands up in defeat.

"That's what I thought," Mr. Andrew states, returning to his presentation of the lab.

"Oops, looks like we are already on his bad side, and it's only the first day." Devin whispers with a smirk on her face.

After finishing the lab, I am about to head out of class, but Devin stops me.

"Here's my number, so we can, um, you know, set up that study date," she says, handing me a scrap of paper with her number scribbled on it. But before I'm able to respond, she walks out of the classroom.

In a daze, I walk over to Becca's locker.

"Hey there, big bro! How are you feeling?" she questions, trying to be funny, while still acting cautiously.

"Um... confused? Yeah, I, uh, got Devin's number?"

"You what? Everett, she has a boyfriend!"

"I know, I know, I just said that we should study together sometime and then after class she gave me it and said that we should set up that 'study date.' I don't know, maybe she just wants to be friends or something?"

"Just be careful, Ev, I don't want you getting your little heart broken over a girl you barely even know."

"I'm not going to get my heart broken, trust me, I know what I'm doing."

"Fine, do what you think is best, but don't say I didn't warn you."

Why does she always have to act like she knows what's best for me? I can take care of myself. Somewhat in defiance, I take out my phone and the small scrap of paper and decide to text Devin.
Everett: Does Friday after school work for you??

Devin: Is this Everett?

Everett: yea :)

Devin: Then yeah, let's meet at my place. Give you the address tomorrow in chem. :)

I don't care what Becca says. I'm not going to go and get my heart broken. I am simply having a study date with a girl who I find extremely attractive who has a boyfriend.

Who are you kidding? You're already falling for her, and when she rejects you, you are going to fall flat on your face.

My conscience really did need to shut up.
