two weeks into her breakup with ej, manny had been slowly but gradually healing. it was still a long road ahead, but she was grateful she had an amazing support system.

her friends have been checking up on her as much as possible, hazel and ricky especially. they've always been the two closest people in her life.

manny was curled up in her bedsheets on late saturday night watching modern family on her laptop when a shadow appeared in her bedroom doorway.

it was ricky.

"hey.. are you okay?" manny worriedly shut her computer, cautiously going up to him. he looked pale and numb, like he'd just seen a ghost.

as unsafe as it sounded, manny left the front door unlocked majority of the time. it was normal for her friends to just walk right in.

with her parents always leaving for long periods of time, it was lonely living in a big house all by herself. so letting her friends just walk in at random hours didn't sound like such a bad idea.

ricky sighed before despairingly announcing, "i think i just broke up with nini."

"what?" the mendoza girl's face dropped in sorrow, "ricky, why would you do that?" she gently asked tugging on his sleeve.

the brunette gulped forcing himself to recall tonights events, "she said she loved me.. and i-"

"you couldn't say it back." manny whispered to herself in realization. she knew him better than anyone else in this world. that had to be it. the boy just quietly nodded, making her aware she was spot on.

"c'mere." manny quickly wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug. ricky didn't hug back at first.. he seemed like he was still in shock.

"she wrote this whole song and posted it on her instagram.. and i just couldn't do it. why couldn't i do it?" ricky kicked himself, slouching past her taking a seat on her bed.

manny got on the bed next, sitting directly next to him. "because it's a complicated word for you." she softly whispered.

"what?" ricky furrowed his brows. he'd spent so much time blaming himself for walking out on nini that he didn't get to process it.

"ricky, you don't say i love you to anyone. never to big red, hazel, me, even your parents." manny explained keeping her tone gentle. it wasn't a bad thing, he just needed to know why.

ricky tilted his head down, appearing a bit frustrated with her painfully true comment, "well my parents don't exactly say it to each other."

"i know how you feel.. when my parents come home they act like robots. they don't love each other, i don't even think they like each other.." the brunette shared. ricky already knew but she was just trying to relate.

manny's eyes crinkled deep in thought as ricky stared at her, "and if it's not a word your parents even say to each other anymore, how could they expect you to put yourself out there.. when you know it'll just fail?"

"exactly.." ricky nodded, feeling relieved that someone was able to put his feelings into words, "i wish she understood that. it feels like no one does."

"except me." manny lowly whispered, showing a half-smile.

and in that moment ricky gave her one single look. one little look, and she knew what was about to happen.

without even a second going by his lips were locked with hers. it quickly became passionate as the kissed deepened and the two began fighting for dominance.

manny felt like she was floating out of her body. how could this be real? she was kissing ricky.. why was she kissing ricky?

does she have the name right? richard "ricky" bowen? the boy she called icky ricky all throughout second and third grade because she thought he had cooties? something just didn't sound right.

for a moment manny snapped herself back into reality pushing his face off of hers, "what are we doing?!"

"i-i'm sorry- i don't know why i did that-" ricky stammered backing away to the foot of the bed. he was in full panic mode.

"we're both way too screwed up right now to think straight." manny justified standing up at her bedside. she wasn't trying to embarrass him or anything, but she was trying to avoid a mistake.

and what she said was true. they'd both just gotten out of long term relationships. it needed to end there before it went any further.

the mendoza girl indecisively sighed running her fingers through her hair, "i think you should go."

ricky was too stunned to speak. he didn't even know why he did that. manny was always like a little sister to him.. what changed?

ricky didn't say a word. he just left. manny deep down didn't want him to go, but what else was she supposed to do? let him stay and possibly make a horrible horrible mistake?

ricky was the most important person in her life. she couldn't risk it.
