when manny arrived at east high for school on monday morning, she was stunned by the destruction that greeted her. the bomb shelter and theater, once filled with vibrant sets and carefully crafted props, now lay in ruins. there had been a fire over the break that destroyed everything they'd spent the semester working so hard for.
"excuse me, kids," a firewoman pushed through the gathered drama club members, who stood on the edge of the bomb shelter behind yellow tape, their faces pale with shock.
"oh my gosh, what happened?" nini gasped, her jaw dropping as she reached the bottom of the stairs and took in the damage.
"it's okay. nobody was hurt," miss jenn appeared in front of them, trying to reassure the group. "there was a small fire in the theater over the holiday, and the sprinklers did their job."
miss jenn's words did little to settle the uneasy atmosphere. everyone continued to stare around at the destruction, disbelief etched on their faces.
"we're almost done in here, just have to finish up the faculty room next," the firewoman told miss jenn, holding up a deflated, burnt-to-a-crisp basketball prop. "some circuits blew in there over the break. unfortunately, the show cannot go on."
the drama club broke into a wave of disappointed chatter, the air heavy with the weight of their collective disappointment.
"what?" miss jenn asked, her voice faint with disbelief.
"the fire ripped through half of your costumes, and the sprinklers ruined a bunch of your sets," the firewoman explained. "i—i'm sorry, but i'm gonna have to red-tag the entire backstage area for a month at least." she handed the charred basketball to a dumbfounded miss jenn.
"did she just say costumes?" kourtney spoke up, her voice breaking with despair.
"okay... okay, listen up!" miss jenn clapped her hands, trying to gather everyone's attention. "hug your neighbor, take a moment, and let's reconvene in the cafeteria after school to talk about options."
manny took the moment of chaos to pull out her phone, trying once again to text gina. she hadn't responded all weekend, and manny was starting to worry that she never would.
"manny and ricky, spread the word," miss jenn instructed.
"got it," ricky replied immediately, his eyes flicking to manny, who was still engrossed in her phone.
"manny?" miss jenn called softly.
manny didn't respond, her fingers still tapping away on her phone as she tried to reach gina.
ricky, standing beside her, noticed her distraction and nudged her gently with his elbow. "hey," he murmured softly.
manny looked up, startled, as if she had forgotten where she was. "huh? sorry. after school in the cafeteria. got it." she quickly shoved her phone into her pocket, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment at being caught out of the moment.
