"Raegan, would you mind helping me with the last batch of Cannolis?" It was nearly 9pm, but the bakery was so busy today that our preparations for tomorrow kept getting pushed back later and later. Sunday is Raegan and I's day off, we have a helper who runs the shop for us on a Sunday - so we have to make sure the bakery is fully stocked and ready for tomorrow! I was tired but still wanted everything to be prepared ready for tomorrow.
It's crazy to think that mine and Raegans bakery has already been open for over two years. Where did the time go? While setting up the Cannolis to be filled I notice in the corner of my eye Raegen coming into the kitchen. She looked just as tired as I felt.
"Can you please remind me why we opened up a bakery again?" She says with an exasperated look on her face,e knowing exactly why we opened up. Letting out a laugh, I remind her "Because it has been both of our dreams since we were kids, and we are finally lucky enough to have our dreams come true!" She pulls a sad face, "Why do you always have to be right?! I must have been drunk making that decision with you." I jokingly roll my eyes, thinking back to that night we decided to follow our dream. We were indeed drunk, but never once have I questioned the decision we made back then.
Raegan and I met four years ago, while we both attended a year of training at a pastry school in Nice. I had just left Italy and thought I might feel alone being in a foreign country, but that's when Raegan came into my life. Late on the first day, she stumbled into the classroom and was assigned to the little kitchen corner right next to me. We later found out we were also assigned as roommates, I knew then that this was going to be the beginning of a really good friendship. Never could I have imagined that this friendship would be more like a sisterhood.
She was the south to my north.
I just knew it right away.
Raegen and I have been through so much together, I can not imagine doing life with anyone else besides me anymore. This might sound sentimental as fuck but this sarcastic woman from London literally turned my world upside down.
And now here we are. Our own bakery, filling up the last batch of cannoli, whilst listening to Taylor Swift's "Lavender Haze".
"Oh, I almost forgot, how did your date go last week?" asked Raegan. I sigh, "Please don't start! I'm so tired of you trying to set me up. Where do you even find these guys?! You know, it was nice in the beginning. He picked me up and we drove to that really nice restaurant you told me about. He ordered a bottle of wine, but then... he didn't let me talk at all. I could literally tell you his whole life story from nursery up til now. Do you know how many years that is? From three months to 26? It's a fucking lot, Raegan. We finished dinner and he drove me home. He told me it would be nice to meet up again. But can you blame me for deleting his number after I told him that I don't think it's a good idea!" I let out a deep breath. Finished with my monologue Raegan looks at me with sad eyes.
"I'm sorry Li, I really thought he was one of the good ones. Lando said he is fun to be around. I'm truly sorry that it turned out to not be the case." I know she is really upset about it and she is genuinely sorry, but I've had enough of her trying to play cupid. She even got her boyfriend Lando involved.
"It's alright, but please maybe just let it be now. I don't want to keep going from one bad date to another. Maybe I'm just better off alone." Raegan let out a gasp, "But..."
"No 'but', Raegan, please. It's annoying and I'm doing perfectly fine on my own."
"I'm not saying you are not but Lando and I..."
And that's when I stop listening. I love Raegan so much, but sometimes she doesn't have any boundaries. She just wants me to be happy and I appreciate that, but what price do I have to pay for that? The guy from last week was bad, but there were some good contenders before him.
