Brielle smiled as they drove into cousins. This town was magical, and it was hers. Every summer was full of fun, the beach, and friendship.
Brielle ran a hand through her hair as she turned to her mom. Laurel sat in the passenger seat with a book in her hand.
"Mom, are you... worried at all?" Brielle asked suddenly and Laurel quickly looked over at her with a small frown.
"About what?" she asked cautiously, and Brielle glanced over at her again. "I'm just asking. You know Connie and Steven won't be here forever..." Brielle trailed off.
It was obvious Brielle was only trying to see if her mom had the same fear as she did. She was afraid that Steven and Conrad would grow up and leave Cousins and her behind.
"Hey, that's far away from now. Try not to think about it too much," Laurel told her, going back to her book.
Brielle sighed, leaning her head back against the seat as she pulled into the driveway. Steven and Belly pulled in right behind her, and she smiled as her favorite people came to greet them.
Brielle unbuckled herself and jumped out of the car, immediately running to hug Jeremiah.
"Jere!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around his neck, almost tackling him to the ground.
"Hey Breezy," he laughed, hugging her back with the same amount of enthusiasm.
When they pulled apart, they both smiled at each other. Brielle couldn't tell if it was just the heat or her mind playing tricks on her, but she swore her heart skipped a beat.
She quickly turned to hug Susannah, who instantly flooded her with compliments.
Brielle adored Susannah. Last year when Brielle decided she wanted to be a YouTuber, Susannah bought her a basic camera and editing software to get her started.
Brielle didn't wait for Conrad to come out. She didn't want to be a part of the whole belly flop tradition. She thought it was a lot, so she normally hid in her room to unpack.
Brielle made her way into the house and up the stairs, nudging her room door open with a small smile.
Her room had light purple walls, and all of her furniture was white. Her bed had purple pillows and a comforter that matched the pillows on her window seat.
She placed her bags on the bed and closed her door. She didn't particularly feel like having anyone barge in on her while she was unpacking.
She set up her phone on her dresser and then pressed play on her playlist. She smiled as Enchanted by Taylor Swift began to play.
She sighed softly and began putting all her clothes away. She hated folding clothes back at home, but here in Cousins, it was just a reminder of the fun that was yet to come.
Halfway through her unpacking, she heard a knock on the door. She paused as she turned to see Jeremiah sticking his head through the door.
"Hey.. wanna go for a swim?" He asked, with a small smile. She glanced at her watch, then back up at him. "15 minutes?" She asked.
"I'll give you 10," he told her before shutting her door. She sighed, speeding up her unpacking.
She quickly changed into a light purple bikini with white flowers all over it and slid her shorts on over top.
Brielle made her way downstairs, smiling as she spotted Jeremiah on the couch, putting on his shoes.
She slowly strolled over to him, giving him a small grin. "you ready to go?" She asked, and he nodded with a small laugh.
"I've been ready, Breezy," he teased, and she smiled. Suddenly, everything around her started to disappear.
She laughed as she watched the boys race down the beach. She and Belly were putting out all their beach supplies on the sand.
She smiled and looked over at Belly, who grinned back. Brielle suddenly took off running, leaving Belly behind, who seemed confused.
Brielle caught up with the boys, who were now in the ocean, splashing each other and falling into every new wave.
Jeremiah grinned as he looked over at her. She laughed and splashed him. "Breezy Brielle strikes again.." he teased, and she rolled her eyes.
END OF FLASHBACK
It seemed like such a stupid nickname back then. Brielle couldn't figure out why it suddenly had her breathless.
She offered him a small smile as she turned and lead them out of the house.
"So have you come out yet or-?" Brielle started, cutting herself off when Jeremiah side-eyed her.
"I always wait for you," he told her and she nodded, turning to look the other way.
"Wanna race?" He asked suddenly, and she frowned at him "No.. I don't feel like racing," She dismissed, and he sighed as he nodded.
Brielle laughed as she took off running, leaving him in her dust. Jeremiah laughed to himself as he ran after her.
This was it. This was what summer was for them. Laughing and teasing each other on the beach, and going back home to sleep it off.
Brielle loved every summer she spent in Cousins, she didn't know that this year would end up being different.
