"Stop moving your tail everywhere Blackkit! If you keep it waving around like that somebody is going to grab it!" Swallowfeather said kindly, but with a trace of frustration creeping into her voice. She nodded in approval once he finally stopped twitching. "There you go. Now, try to do the leap and twist move we worked on yesterday with Stormkit."

Blackkit smirked before turning around to face Stormkit. "You ready, Tinykit? If you're too scared you can go back to the nursery." He muttered so only Stormkit could hear. She didn't react to his taunts, and flicked her tail to signal that she was ready.

Blackkit's eyes narrowed and he moved his tail slowly back and forth, fixing his eyes on a spot a few feet above Stormkit. He suddenly sprang forward and leapt into the air, twisting around right before landing on Stormkit's shoulders.

To her's and Blackkit's shock, Stormkit managed to stay upright.
Using her brother's surprise to her advantage, she reared backwards, throwing him off and making him sprawl ungraciously into the sand.

Stormkit couldn't hold in a giggle as the black tom stood up half covered in sand, his dark fur making the sand stick out more.
Stormkit saw Spottedkit making an unusually straight face, but then their eyes met and they couldn't help it.

"Haha." Blackkit hissed at the russet and gray she-kits as they rolled around laughing their heads off.
This was the first time that Stormkit had smiled in the last moon, and she just couldn't hold in her laughter because it felt so good to do it.
Her laughter only increased when she saw Blackkit's fur after he'd shaken the sand out.

"Oh shut up already." He grumbled before stomping away towards a amused looking Swallowfeather.

"I challenge Frogfang the hunter to a fight!" Azure, a golden colored she-cat shouted defiantly, her bluish green eyes daring someone to protest.
Nobody did.
Redstar padded forward until he stood to the side of the rogue. "Frogfang, do you accept the challenge from Azure the prisoner?"

Stormkit sat in small clearing behind the nursery, watching as a light brown tom who she assumed to be Frogfang stepped forward.
"I accept." He snarled.

Stormkit felt bad for the golden she-cat. Frogfang was a rather large tom, and he was also fed well——unlike Azure, who's ribs were showing from lack of food.

Redstar half smiled. "Very well. The prisoner has a chance to become a hunter if she beats Frogfang. She has only won if she had killed Frogfang or if he has surrendered. Same for winning with Frogfang. Now both you step into the arena."

Stormkit watched as Frogfang strutted into the large circle of sand that marked the fighting arena.
She already didn't like the brown tom.

As soon as both of the cats were inside the line, Redstar raised his tail and shouted, "Go!"

Frogfang immediately threw himself forward, which was a mistake as Azure lightly sidestepped him. She flashed her paw out and hit Frogfang on the side of his body as he ran past her.
Stormkit couldn't see Frogfang's reaction due to Redstar being in the way, but she heard it. His hiss sounded very loud in the silent camp.
But then a few heartbeats later Azure's cry of pain was even louder.
Redstar finally moved his big fat tail, allowing Stormkit to see Azure with a large slash down her back and Frogfang with a cut across his side.

Redstar let out a loud jeer. "Come on Frogfang, can't you take on a weak, underfed she-cat?"
His words made the previously silent ShadeClan cats suddenly add their own taunts.
"She's just a rogue!"
"Come on, Frogkit! Kill the weak she-cat!"
"Her parents were probably kittypets!"

Stormkit felt a sudden anger overtake her as Frogfang knocked Azure over, and she stepped out of her hiding place.
"You can do it, Azure!" She yowled as loud as she could.
The small red she-cat felt several ShadeClan cats turn their gazes onto her, but she just ignored them, keeping her own eyes on Azure.

The golden she-cat suddenly sprang back up, taking advantage of Frogfang's distracted mind. She leaped up, using the same move Blackkit had done with Stormkit earlier and bit down on the back of his neck. She didn't even let go when Frogfang's blood smeared onto her face and he started trying to swing her off.
His attempts to throw her off grew weaker and weaker until he collapsed under Azure's weight.
"I-I..." he gurgled, a small drip of blood sliding down his face.
"Surren..." he stopped moving before he could finish speaking.

Redstar looked down at Frogfang's bloodied body with disgust.
"At least he didn't survive long enough to surrender." He spat. "Anyway, welcome Azure, Cloudwing will be your mentor until you have learned enough to become a full hunter." Redstar said, turning his blue eyes to the shaking golden she-cat.

"Darkheather, fix Azure up so she can begin training as soon as possible. And Stormkit," Redstar's cold gaze suddenly switched from the medicine cat to Stormkit, who was frozen in fear of Redstar's fury that was sure to come.
Instead, he nodded to her. "You're brave, for being a runt."

Stormkit's throat was so dry she couldn't speak, so she nodded her head back at him, hoping she didn't look as terrified as she felt.

Once her leader's judging eyes had left her russet pelt, she span around and charged into the nursery—only to crash into a black tom who stood hidden in the entrance.

"Excuse me, Blackkit." Stormkit said, trying to worm her way around her littermate.
Blackkit's green eyes were almost as cold as Redstar's as he glared at her, but for once he didn't have a taunt or a jabbing claw to make her hurry faster away from him. He just turned away and looked back out into the camp, as though she wasn't worth his time.

Stormkit finally managed to push past Blackkit and into the dark nursery. Mintkit, Spottedkit and Swallowfeather were all still asleep thankfully, and she was able to quietly pad last them and lay down in her own small nest.
She wasn't sure of she liked the new Blackkit. He almost seemed... scary.

Stormkit pushed away all of her thoughts and tucked her nose under her tail, instantly falling asleep.

_______

Two Moons later

"Spottedkit, Mintkit, Stormkit and Blackkit, please step forward." Redstar yowled from up on the Leader's Stone.

Stormkit only felt dread as she stepped forward with her littermates.
"Kits, since you have reached the rightful age of 3 moons, it is time for your Survival Test." Redstar's eyes suddenly brightened with a light that sent ice through Stormkit's stomach. "You will have to stay alive in our territory for an entire half moon without getting caught by any of the patrols or hunters. If you do get caught, they have permission to kill you." He let those words echo in the quiet camp for a few moments before continuing. "You can stay together or split up, it's your choice. This test determines who really wants to live and it teaches you to survive.
Which is what you'll need in ShadeClan.
If you do survive, you will earn your apprentice names. If you don't... well, you'll be dead. Now get to the starting position."

Blackkit shoved Stormkit over before padding to stand by Mintkit.
She felt a growl resinate deep in her chest from anger at her brother, and all she wanted right then was to rake her claws over his ears.
That probably wouldn't be the greatest thing to do right then though, so she stood back and up and padded over to stand beside Spottedkit instead.

"Three. Two. One. GO!" Redstar yowled.

They took off in a sprint.
