Stormkit and her littermates paused as they reached a fork in the path.
Blackkit turned to the side of the path that looked less doomy and beckoned to Mintkit and Spottedkit with his tail.

"Come on, Stormkit won't survive anyway. We don't need her to come with us." Blackkit said coldly, his voice reflecting the dark look that had flared in his eyes before.

Stormkit felt hurt shoot through her stomach as Spottedkit nodded along with Mintkit.
"Spottedkit?" She asked with a sinking heart.
Spottedkit looked down on Stormkit as though she was nothing more than a annoying kit begging to play.
"Bye, Tinykit." She said emotionlessly before padding away to stand beside Blackkit.
"Don't follow us." Mintkit warned, showing her teeth.

Stormkit flattened her ears. "Don't worry, I won't follow a bunch of back stabbing pieces of mousedung." She turned away to show her distaste.
"Why you little-"

Stormkit took off into the marshlands behind her before Blackkit could finish his sentence.

The russet she-cat just let her paws carry her, not caring where she went as long as it was away from her littermates.

Spottedkit had always been so nice to Stormkit. What had happened that made her gray sister change so much? Or maybe she didn't change, maybe she was always just pretending to be nice: waiting for the time that when she showed her true colors, it would hurt me the most, a small voice at the back of Stormkit's mind whispered.

She suddenly stopped running as a strong fish-like smell reached her scent glands. This is probably the MistClan border, she thought, remembering when Swallowfeather had told her about the other clans.

Swallowfeather.
Had she just been pretending to be nice too?
Stormkit shook her head to clear her thoughts. She could think later. But for now, she needed to find somewhere she could shelter for the next half moon.

---

A few fallen leaves at the base of a huge pine tree rustled, making Stormkit stiffen. She slowly turned around and began to lightly pad forward, trying to remember how she'd seen the Hunters stalk prey.

She stopped moving as a little brown mouse moved out of it's hiding place in the leaves.
She suddenly sprang forward, landing on top of the mouse and killing it with a sharp bite to the neck. Her stomach growled in appreciation while pride shot through her. She'd caught her first prey!

She subconsciously looked up, foolishly expecting to see her mother looking down at her with pride shining in her green eyes.

But what she didn't expect to see was a half starved Spottedkit eyeing her prey.

Stormkit immediately fluffed up her fur and hissed a warning to her sister.
Spottedkit paid no heed and stepped forward. "Give it to me, Tinykit." She growled.

"No, Weakkit." Stormkit growled back. "If you want it, you'll have to go through me."
Stoppedkit sneered. "Okay then."
Stormkit felt her eyes widen as Blackkit and Mintkit padded to stand beside Spottedkit. Three against one?
Not fair-nor cool.
"Go find your own prey, mousebrains. Or are you all to stupid to catch a dumb mouse?"
Stormkit knew she was going to pay for what she just said, but the red she-kit didn't really care.

Blackkit had a murderous look on his face that made Stormkit flinch. But before he could say or do anything, fresh ShadeClan scent reached their noses.

Oh foxdung.

Stormkit turned around and jumped into a small holly bush as Blackkit flattened his ears. Runningriver and Sparrowpaw walked out, one on each side of Blackkit, Spottedkit and Mintkit.
"Well, well. Look at what we have here, Sparrowpaw." Runningriver hissed. "They didn't last very long."
The long limbed tom flicked his tail and narrowed his eyes. "Where's the other kit?"

Stormkit's fur started to rise along her spine. She didn't want to give away her position, just in case Blackkit hadn't seen where she'd hidden, so she forced herself to hold still.

"Sparrowpaw, how about you use the new move I showed you earlier on them." Runningriver said with a faint sneer starting to grow on his face. Sparrowpaw didn't give a sign that he'd heard his mentor before he sprang forward.
He jumped between Spottedkit and Mintkit, jabbing one of his front paws at Mintkit and one of his back paws at Spottedkit.
Mintkit fell before Blackkit finally recovered from his shock enough to move.
The black tom let out a loud yowl and jumped onto Sparrowpaw, knocking the ginger tom away from Spottedkit.

Stormkit took that as an opportunity to jump out of her hiding place. Without thinking first, she threw herself onto Sparrowpaw, ripping clawfulls of his fur out in the process.
Runningriver seemed to realize that his apprentice was struggling, so he grabbed Spottedkit by her scruff and threw her over beside a motionless Mintkit. With Spottedkit's weight now lifted, Sparrowpaw reared onto his hind paws, throwing Stormkit and Blackkit off.

Before Stormkit could get back up, Runningriver swiped at her, raking his claws along her face.

Her head felt like it would burst with pain, and her vision turned red from her blood that dripped into her eyes.

The last thing she saw was Runningriver sink his teeth into Blackkit's neck.
