I've got my money on things goin' badly
Got a history of stories ending sadly
Still hoping that the fire won't burn me

The Opera Ghost seemed idle for the longest time, ever so much that you forgot about him. Up until costumes started disappearing and the gossip from the ballerinas grew like a tidal wave.
And suddenly, so did your sense of dread.
Not of the Phantom, you could never be afraid of him, but instead of what you felt about him, how it would turn out wrong, how he only ever had one true love who you could never compare to.
Tears welled up in your eyes as you rushed to find your stack of papers. Lines of prose flowed from the tip of your pen, words that never seemed to come to mind when you were around him, yet in the loneliness of the costume department, you wrote the most beautiful confession of love one could dream of.
Without another glance at it, you crumpled up the piece of paper and threw it in the trash can. Regulating your breathing, you went to the roof, to clear your head, to get rid of anything that reminder you of your unrequited affection for the Opera Ghost.
The chill in the air lured you awake, the crispness of it bringing you back to life. You wiped your tears and your face dropped. Without a trace of emotion, you stared at the city from this high.
Closing your eyes, you evened your breath, no longer gasping for air but lazily inhaling and exhaling.
Fabric swished behind you.
"Please leave me alone. I don't want to talk right now."
Then you felt a presence behind you.
"We don't have to talk."
You nodded and slid down on the ground. Moments later, Erik sat beside you, golden brown eyes searching yours for answers.
He was the last person you wanted to see, yet you craved his closeness, so, so much the tears almost bubbled up again. When Erik shifted closer, you moved away from him.
"Please, don't."

All I know is this could either break my heart or bring it back to life
Got a feelin' your electric touch could fill this ghost town up with life
He could not understand what got you in such state, but the moment he saw the tears in your crystalline eyes, he swore to turn whatever had hurt you to ashes. Erik hated that anyone could make you feel like he felt, all those months ago.
He was willing to sit with you, in dead silence, trying to read your body language, to get anything from you. Waiting patiently for the moment you wanted to share your burdens. If you didn't, he would.
The piece of paper inside his pocket seemed to drag him down, nail him into place right beside you. He wouldn't have gone anywhere, not until you knew what he knew, not until he took his chance. Between your lines, love and hate blurred, something he had experienced first hand. He had to let you know.
"Ma rose, would you listen to me for a moment?"
You nodded and shuffle closer to him, unknowingly. Your knees were just touching. Erik took a staggering breath and cringed at how his confidence had suddenly vanished. With those glassy eyes staring up at him, something broken ached inside of him.
"I know that this... thing between us could beat me down until I'm bleeding or bring me back to at least the fragment of the man I was. But I'm willing to take that chance with you."
Tears welled up again in your eyes "No, you're lying. Look at you and look at me. You're effortless, and here I am, trying too hard not to look like I'm trying. I'm used to loneliness, used to things not working out. I don't blame you, please don't pity me."
Erik looked at you like you had shattered his snowglobe of a world, like the shards went straight into his heart.
"I want to need you, forever, until the end of times," he laid his palm on yours, a shy smile peeking out under his mask "you're not a burden, you never were and you never will be, but I respect your wishes. Maybe the stars will be in our favour in the future."
You gasped. That was from your prose.
"You... You found it?"
Erik chuckled "I did. Your writing is beautiful, I just wanted to let you know, I've always care about you. More than a friend should."
With that, Erik stood, fully set on leaving you there, alone with your thoughts.
"Wait-"
You almost slammed into his chest, his strong arms coming around you, holding you, grounding you. The tears would not stop as you chuckled wetly. Looking up into those golden brown eyes, you saw something like never before, a gleam you daydreamed about so many times.
Without hesitation, you closed the distance. It was awkward and short and tear stained yet the most romantic thing that had ever happened to you. Sparks of electricity rushed into every part of your body, his closeness setting you aflame.
When you separated, you caressed Erik's mask with a newfound fondness. He leaned into the touch like a cat, almost purring.
"I care about you too. More than I'd like to, sometimes."
