"What's wrong now?" Jessica quipped, their banter as familiar as an old sitcom.

Edvin dramatically sighed, exclaiming, "Oh for fuck's sake, I really can't get anything these days."

Jessica raised an eyebrow, their relationship almost sibling-like. "What's the crisis this time?"

With a mix of exasperation and drama, Edvin revealed the contents of the dreaded email. "I just received an email about the 'Invisible String' chemistry reading. Not only is the reading a day after we get back from Brazil, but my partner is Adrian Wood."

Jessica's eyes widened in mock horror, her lips curving into a playful grin. "You've done worse, at least the time difference isn't going to be that bad. What, it's like 4 hours?"

"True, but the Adrian part is definitely going to DESTROY me..."

Jessica leaned in a mischievous twinkle in her eye. "Is he one of your hookups?"

Edvin baulked, trying to sound appalled. "Quite the opposite... He absolutely hates my guts."

"And why would that be? What have you done this time?"

Edvin deflected, waving his hands defensively. "Me? I did not lift a finger."

"Hmm, remind me again how you managed to annoy someone without lifting a finger."

Edvin's gaze turned distant, his mind wandering through the memories of their encounters. "We've crossed paths before, have mutual friends even. But every time I tried to talk to him, he'd just give me the cold shoulder."

Jessica leaned in, bumping her fist against Edvin's shoulder, an affectionate gesture in their language. "Well, he's a professional actor, and you're aiming to be one. You'll be fine."

Edvin's gaze turned serious, revealing the deeper concern beneath "But Jess, how am I supposed to pretend we're madly in love for the chemistry read when he won't even talk to me?"

"Listen, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both of you. No matter what you two have, I'm sure he can be professional for this." Jessica reassured him.

Her words struck a chord, and Edvin's determination began to override his anxiety. "You're right. Do I have time to run my lines before going on stage?"

Jessica grinned, "How about you run lyrics to 'Hits Different'? I saw on TikTok that you messed up the lyrics last night."

Edvin scoffed, the artist in him rising to defend his craft. "Umm... We're on the 178th show of this tour. I've performed that song 177 times perfectly. Yesterday was a mere fluke; I was hungry and my stomach gurgled."

Jessica chuckled, knowing Edvin's artistic pride was his armour. "Fine, fine, but don't come crying to me when Twitter stans start attacking you again."

"Hey, that only happened once." Before Edvin could protest further, Jessica was already heading out of his dressing room, leaving him to gather his thoughts. With only a few shows left on the tour, he knew he couldn't afford to start getting sloppy now.

The Morning of the Chemistry Reading

Jessica nudged Edvin, nodding toward the tall, blonde, boyish-looking man immersed in his script on the other side of the room.

"Stop glaring and just go say hi," Jessica nudged him.

Edvin's eyes flicked towards the man. "Why? So I could be ignored again? Trust me, I've tried talking to that guy several times, and the most I've ever gotten was a scoff."
