Mahogany looked down to see what She tripped over. She almost vomited from what she saw. Nadine laid on the floor beside her unconscious. Her mouth was twisted. Mahogany had learned enough to know that her grandma had a stroke.
Her heart was racing erratic. She scrambled to her feet. She didn't know if her grandma was dead or alive. More than anything she hoped that she was dead.
Kneeling down beside her She checked her pulse. Nadine didn't have one. Her face was blue. Mahogany peeped out of the blinds to make sure no one was coming. She bit down on her bottom lip and sat across from Nadine's dead body on the sofa. She wanted to be sure that her grandma was dead.
Thirty minutes later she dialed 911. Mahogany wore a blank look. The paramedics tried reviving her but it was too late.
A lot of family that she didn't know existed came. Before the state's got Mahogany's cousin Sade volunteered to keep her at the house until they could find a family member for her to stay with. She hoped that whoever it was, was nothing like her grandma.
Even though she didn't want to go to the funeral her family forced her to go. After the funeral she sat and watched family members argue about the ugly ass busted house that Nadine once owned.
Mahogany leaned in a corner and continued to listen.
Not once did anyone mention who she was going to live with. This lady sitting in the corner next to her husband or boyfriend would look over at Mahogany then back at him.
Finally the lady got up and decided to approach her while everyone was still arguing.
"I'm Ann. You can call me Aunty Ann." She said in a lazy southern accent welcoming Mahogany into her embrace. "I'm your mama's sister."
She wasn't aware of her mama having a sister. She always thought that her mama was the only child.
"My mama doesn't have a sister." Mahogany protested pulling back from the embrace.
"That's a long story but I want you to meet someone." She grabbed her hand and led her in the direction of the man that she was whispering to.
"Nice to meet you, lil Keresa." He held his hand out for Mahogany to shake it.
"Don't call me that." She scrunched her face and shook his hand.
"I'm sorry Mahogany ." He chuckled. "What uma do with another attitude?" He looked up at Ann.
She shook her head and smiled. Ann was a pretty woman. She wore her hair in a short style. Her light brown skin complimented her hazel brown eyes. The man was light skinned with dreads and drenched in tattoos.
"I'm Kent, but call me uncle Kent." He nodded.
She didn't know what to say. It sounded like that they were her new caretakers.
"I have two other girls. They are a trip I tell ya." He smirked. "The oldest one is Danna. She's around your age maybe one year younger. My baby girl Gegee, she's 8." He smiled.
"Sorry if we came off kinda crazy. From here on out you'll be living with us." Ann said as she shook her head and smiled.
Not sure of what she was going into she returned the gesture.
"Well we're about to get out of here because it looks like it's about to get crazy." Uncle Kent looked around the room at the angry bunch of people. "You can go and pack." He assured.
Mahogany made her way through the loud obnoxious people that flooded the living room. In her room she stuffed all of her clothes in a suitcase, which weren't many and her journals. Those meant the world to her. She looked over at the Bible sitting on the nightstand. Without thinking twice she left it in it's place. She didn't want to carry any bad memories with her.
