Chaos. That was the only word that could come to Jules' mind when she stepped out of the ambulance and took in the sight of the destruction in front of her. The hotel that once exuded grandeur and wealth was now marred with cracks and looked like a giant ripped it right out of the earth. Debris and rubble were strewn across the entrance, blanketing the sidewalk. This destruction caused by the earthquake was a true testament to the power of nature's fury. A harsh reminder of the fragility of human construction and mortality.
"Listen up, here's how you'll make it to the end of the day. You don't worry about the things that you can't do anything about. Focus on one task at a time. I can't order you guys to go inside that building, and I'm not going to judge you if you decide not to." Bobby announced.
"Hen, Jules, you both have a kid so..." Chimney started, looking at the two women. Eddie's eyes shot over to Jules with surprise. He didn't know she had a kid. He felt his heart drop a little at the realization that she was most likely not single.
"Yeah. And I'd hope if someone whose job it was to save him had the chance, they'd do it." Hen said with passion.
"If anything were to happen to me, Grayson would understand. He'd know his mom died saving others." Jules bit her lip trying not to get teary eyed at the thought of leaving Grayson. Her emotions had been running wild since the first earthquake. On the ride to the scene, she was unable to contact her son or the school due to there being no service.
"Where do you want us?" Eddie asked Bobby.
Before Bobby could answer, a police officer informed them of a situation they needed to see. And a situation it was. A man could be seen pressed up against the cracked window roughly 11 floors up. Eddie and Buck were delegated to go rescue the man while Bobby was paired with Chimney and Hen was paired with Jules. The foursome entered the first floor, immediately spotting the first deceased body. Bobby marked the spot with a neon X and led the team further into the lobby.
"LAFD Fire and rescue," Bobby called out.
"Anybody down here?" Chimney echoed.
"Right here," a male voice alerted.
"All right, we got a voice over here, guys. Let's go." Bobby led the way over to where the voice was heard.
Another firefighter informed the group that there was a kid further in the wreckage that required EMT assistance. The group proceeded until they were met with a horrifying scene. A young man was trapped underneath a cement pillar with an older man by his side. Hen and Jules rushed to his side to start assessing his condition.
"What's your name sweetie?" Jules asked as she started to dig through her bag for a stethoscope.
"Jeff." He groaned, trying to stay calm despite the obvious pain he was in.
"Jeff? Hang tight. We are right here," the brunette comforted as she started taking vitals.
In the background, Jules could hear Bobby asking a firefighter if he tried moving debris to free Jeff but once they hit the beam, the megillah started shifting.
