In the taxi on the way to the hotel I could see Rose was worried. She loved her dad so much and to see him react like that was probably more than "grumpy" in her mind. I reached out and touched her hand with mine. She turned towards me then began to cry and I put my arm around her.

"He's afraid," I said. "You know how much he loves the job and how he identifies himself as a police officer. This injury could end that for him. I think he's also angry at me for being there."

"Why?" Rose pulled away to look at me, confused. "You saved him."

"Yeah, but think of it from his point of view," I replied. "He dropped everything to go into witness protection with me, so that he could protect me. It probably bothers him that I ended up doing for him what he swore to do for me. I don't agree with that as I was just a wife trying to keep her husband safe but I understand it."

"You're not going to split up over it are you?" asked Rose and I could see all sorts of fear in her eyes at the prospect of this coming between Bucky and me.

"No, he's got me for life," I said, as reassuringly as I could.

"Even though he and Mom were always good with each other it always bothered me that they couldn't fix their differences. I love Dan as a stepfather, and my half-siblings mean a lot to me but I always felt ... cheated that my parents split up. You love each other so much and I don't want this to wreck it for you."

"It won't," I replied. "Your dad is a very caring man, and very much in tune with his emotions. That's probably why I fell in love with him so quickly and agreed to marry him. This is a setback but he's always faced challenges head on and he'll do the same with this. You know that, in your heart, right?"

She nodded, sitting back in the taxi but still holding my hand, taking a deep breath.

"Do you think Dad would be okay if Joaquin and I got married?"

"Probably." I smiled and looked out the window before looking back at her. "He cares about him a lot, respects him. It was your dad that told me to get Joaquin when you had your meltdown on the video call. Said that he should know how to help you when you got like that. I think he was giving him permission to take it further."

"When we had the time together at the hospital he asked me to marry him. Said he would do it right, with a ring and everything but he's sure he wants me to be his wife. I said yes."

"That's wonderful," I replied. She still seemed tentative. "It is wonderful, isn't it?"

She nodded. "I've missed this semester but I can still take the next one and then finish my degree in summer school," she said. "Joaquin said we can get married after I finish but I kind of want to do it sooner. If anything happened to him between now and after I graduate I would kick myself for agreeing to wait."
