As we pulled into the parking lot of the office. We noticed a teenager pulling on the front door with a black hoodie. Miss Amy looked at me in fear, "I know this negro is not trying to rob the office in broad daylight." I reached between my seat and pulled out my weapon, and told her to have her phone ready to dial 911 if things got out of control.
I was not too worried. Because there is no crime rate in this community. If you ever call our police station, we only have 4 officers that work a day or night shift every 3 days. We are small, and everyone in this area knows each other.
I got out of the car, not screaming or yelling. I heard the young man's voice tremble, "Where is everyone?" I knew then he was not there to harm no one. This guy just wanted help. I slide the weapon into my pocket, out of sight, not wanting to scare him away. I approached the young man gently. "Excuse me, son. Can I help?" The boy looked at me with tears dripping down his face. "Delvin, what are you doing here? I thought your appointment was Wednesday."
"That's what I put in," said Miss Amy standing behind me with her keychain pepper spray.
"I had to leave school early and talk to someone quickly. I will pay you extra for this visit today, but please listen to me. I can't take this no more."
"Do worry about it. Let me open the doctor and get settled in. Miss Amy, get this boy some water."
As I unlocked the doors and turned on the lights. I heard Miss Amy, "I am charging for my services today. Boy, you almost gave me a heart attack." Delvin felt around in his back pocket and sweating. "I do not have it. I left my bags and everything at the school."
Miss Amy told him she was joking. Sat him on the sofa and gave him a cool towel and water. His energy was high, and we could tell something was wrong. I knew this was a job I couldn't do by myself. I am glad Miss Amy is here with me. She may not be a doctor, but she gets a prayer through. "Thank you so much," Devlin responded. I sat at my desk and called the school, Delvin's parents, and the police station.
I could hear Miss Amy talking to him, and all he could say was, "Breath, Dee, Breath." Whatever was going on in his mind. Had him in an uproar. I couldn't wait to talk with him to see what had happened. Praying, at the same time, asking God to keep him safe and protected.
"Hello, this is Dr. Charles Skye. I have a student here at my office. He is also a client of mine. Yes, that is his name. Yes, he seems to be unharmed. Please, mark him safe. I will likewise reach out to his parents." Phone call number one has been completed. I wanted to make sure he was still ok before I called his parents, so I buzzed into Miss Amy's phone to listen. I heard her talking to him. It sounded like he was calming down.
To make it seem as if I was not spying on them, I said through the speaker, "Miss Amy, I am forwarding you all the calls." She kept talking to him. "Delvin, I am not sure when the last time you heard these words, but here in Dr. Skye's office, we love you." He responded, "Love is a powerful word."
I buzzed out and called his parents. "I will talk with him and bring him home myself," I promised. I ended that call. Then, Miss Amy knocked on my door. "Doc, he's ready."
Delvin walked into the office, calm but nervous in his legs. I had him take a seat in the same spot as last time. I sat in the chair to the right of him. In sessions like this, making the patients relax, helps them to feel comfortable and willing to vent is very important to releasing stress. I told him to make sure at home. He didn't take long to think about it. He took off his shoes and lay on the sofa, legs straight out. I was glad because this position let me knew, he was comfortable enough to talk to me.
"Dr. Skye, I need your help."
"Just breathe and tell me what is going on."
I took out my Delvin's notebook and pen to take notes. Sat back and listened to his story.
