I did not sleep well that night. All I could think about was why Trey wanted to meet me early this morning. Well, six o'clock hit. I sat on the side of my bed to pray, followed by my daily routine.
I pulled up to this old dusty brick building. We pay too much tax money for this building to look this shaggy. The sign said CPD, which is how I knew I was in the right place. The weather was nice and pleasant that day. The hand was 7:32 a.m., so I sat in the car listening to Travis Green, Kirk Franklin, & John P. Kee. My moms always told me it was good to be 15 mins early, not 15 mins late.
It was 7:45 by then. So, I got out of my car with my brown Stacy Adams and navy blue slacks. I wore a white shirt and red tie that day. When I entered, the clerk welcomed me with open arms. "I'm here to see Investigator Trey."
Trey was standing at the door. I looked when I heard the loud squeak and heard him say, "Come on back. I have been waiting on you." Following him down this long dark hall with flickering lights. We shared a short conversation. I tried to focus and not show my fears. I had never been in a jailhouse before, so imagine me feeling like an outcast.
He finally brought me to this small box room. It was only two chairs and a table to separate us. When they slammed the door, I jumped behind the chair. "Sir, how has your morning been?"
"I have been good to have a seat," he gestured. While taking my seat, I started the conversation, "Thank you. Do we have any good news?" Thinking I was about to get the answers. He replied, "The accident, no, but there is a new case."
A new case? Why does he want me to know about this? I have done nothing wrong. I just started getting out of the house a few days ago. What could this new case have to do with me?
Trey continued to inform me on this new case, "After yesterday, we understand you have Delvin Ervin as a client." At that moment, I knew exactly where this was going. I let Trey know the legal contract I signed with Delvin. I could not share any of our session discussions with anyone.
He went on to say that Delvin's parents informed him about me after he returned home yesterday. "He showed interest in you as a role model and mentor." That statement made me a little emotional. I have been in this career field for a few years, and no one has ever called me a role model.
Trey handed me a box of tissues. I was ashamed because I did not think I was crying. Trying to play it off I told him it was bug or hair in my eye.
"The parents have some concerns. He may be involved in a few illegal actions or know of sometimes." I was shocked and questioned why we were still talking about Delvin. He shows no trouble in our sessions, except yesterday when he appeared at my office mid-school day.
He then told me the same story that Jasmine mentioned the other day. Principal Nathaniel's grandson died after a party he hosted. But, Trey brought up that Delvin attend the party. I know this kid is not a murderer.
He must be reading my mind. "We do not believe Delvin did the killing, but he knows something about it. I would not be shocked or surprised if he knew who did it, how they did it, and why they did it.
I was back at my first point. "What does this have to do with me?" I asked. Trey replied, "We desire you to build a rapport with him. Just see what he will you." I can not believe they want me to be a spy. I wonder if Delvin said I was his role model. Was it just a way to get inside my head? At this moment, I was offended and provoked.
Angrily, I asked, "How will this benefit me?"
"This will give us insight or lead the way to the driver that hit your wife's car," Trey replied
"You think this helps my case?" furious.
"We are taking a chance."
Why are they taking a chance with me? I just want answers to who killed my wife and daughter. No, those answers will not bring them back, but at least I can have relief knowing that the person can not kill anyone else.
Then, I began to contradict myself. What if Principal Nathaniel's grandson was the driver? He's already dead, but his parents deserve answers like me on who killed their loved one. I am not sure about this. Delvin is a good guy, and I don't think he will do something like that. But, as I know, he is smart and will openly help. I FEEL TRAPPED!
Trey made things no better. I felt he was pressing me into giving him a direct answer. That was something I could not do at that moment. That was one thing I had to add to my prayer list. I had to leave that place and pray before making this final decision.
I expressed that to Trey. He gave me his card to contact him when I had an answer. Of course, I thanked him for the opportunity. A lesson I learned as a child. Show gratitude, whether you agree or disagree.
Unfortunately, Trey an unconcerned reply, "I am not going to say you're welcome. The final results are up to you." I took a deep breath and stood up from my seat, heading to the black metal steel door. Trey mentioned a ten thousand reward. Money does not bribe me. Just as quick as you get it, the quicker it's gone. I turned the knob and left out of the door.
