I took the bus into Jericho after classes had finished for the day, practising what to say to Wednesday. When I got there she was already waiting outside the cafe, reading a worn hardback book. "Whatcha reading?" I said as I approached. "Wuthering Heights" she responded without looking up. "Any good?" "It's...adequate". "Oh right I'm more of a Jane Eyre girl myself" I said but she ignored me, "erm...shall we?" and I held open the door for her. She snapped the book shut and walked in, glaring at me as she did. "Brace yourself Mya".
We ordered our drinks at the counter then found a quiet booth together away from listening ears. I opened up to her about Larissa and apologised for any pain I might have caused her or her family. She stared at me with those cold eyes the whole time, barely blinking, just sipping her coffee. I knew she could be trusted to keep secrets, she was never one to start rumours or listen to idle gossip, simply because she found it boring. Eventually she broke her gaze and stared into her now-empty cup. "I'm not angry at you. I'm angry at my foolish mother for letting her libido get the better of her and cheating on my father. We all know how much you like Weems, I'm sorry things didn't work out". "It's for the best. We all have to move on now. Thanks for understanding Wednesday". She stayed silent but gave a flicker of a smile.
"How about I get that last piece of chocolate cake for us to share?" I said pointing to the large glass cabinet in the corner filled with delicious looking cakes. "Sure" she said and got her book back out while I went back up to the counter. I joined the queue and searched my pockets for my wallet, as I pulled it out I heard the person in front of me place their order. "A decaf latte and a slice of chocolate cake to go please" the young woman said cheerily. "Ah crap!" I exclaimed in what I thought was a quiet voice. "I'm sorry?" she turned around to face me with an amused grin. My mouth fell open at how attractive she was; long curly auburn hair, emerald green eyes, full pink lips and cute freckles. "I...um...I was g-gonna order the cake too for me and my f-friend" I stuttered. "Oh! Well..." she looked me up and down, "how about we trade?" "Trade?" "Yes, I'll trade you this slice of cake...for your phone number". I laughed, "are you serious?" "Very! This cake is pretty delicious you know". I gulped. There was something very captivating about this girl and I didn't even know her name yet! "Alright then. May I borrow your phone please?" "You have manners too, good to know" she sounded impressed and handed me her phone. When she took it back she looked at the name I typed in with the number, "a pleasure to meet you Mya". "And you. What's your name?" "Jasmine" and as the server handed her the cake she handed it to me, "enjoy!" She paid the server then left with her takeaway coffee, winking at me as she passed. "See you around pretty". "S-see you".
When I turned around to go back to the booth, I got the fright of my life as I was met by the towering figure of Principal Weems glaring down at me. "Hello Miss Silva" she tried to say as pleasantly as she could. "Oh god! Hi P-Principal Weems". "That girl was very...forward". "Yeah she was" I giggled nervously. "I'm pleased to see you're moving on" she said sincerely, but I wondered if she actually meant it. "Thanks. Anyway I best get back to Wednesday". "Oh yes of course. See you at school Mya". I hurried back to the table and sat there completely dumbstruck. Wednesday's book had been long forgotten and she was grinning at me with the most mischievous look on her face. "That was far superior to anything Emily Bronte could write" and she tucked in to the cake.
