Amara
The clouds roll in the sky. The breeze is crisp, and the grass I plopped in tickles my hands as I feather my palms along the strands. Highwing chirps as she chases bugs and small prey in the field.
Six hundred twenty-five minutes late.
I can't stop the countdown in my head. My internal monologue won't stop reminding me that Sebastian has yet to find me after last night. My mind silenced itself after I cried all the tears my body could create. Sleep didn't find me, it seldom does. I was hoping that once I returned to Hogwarts that I would start to sleep like a normal person again, but that's not the case.
Highwing charged toward me when I walked toward the field near Beasts class. She must have sensed my clouded mind. The second she nudged into me, I smiled and hugged her as tightly as I could. Over the last few months has been a friend, a comfort I could rely on. I'm glad she's still here, and that she didn't run away from me.
Highwing tramples toward me again, but that's not what makes my muscles tense. A pair of feet approach me, and he's only six hundred thirty-one minutes late.
"Fuck off, Sallow," I grumble, not in the mood to listen to him charm his way out of the trouble he's currently in.
"I suppose it's a good thing I'm not Sebastian."
Sitting up, I sigh and collapse back into the grass when Rylan smirks at me.
"Fuck off, Nox."
"Well, I guess I deserve that." Rylan chuckles as he plops next to me. Keeping my attention on the clouds, I start to zone out. The anger I felt rile within me dissipates, leaving me cold and numb.
"I wanted to apologize."
I tilt my head toward him, squinting as the sunlight fills my eyes. "For what?" My tone is emotionless, that's what Sebastian has done to me.
Rylan looks down at me and sighs with a genuine smile. "For the night I didn't show. I get the feeling you don't care, but I was caught by a prefect. They gave me detention for a month. I did try to find you afterward, but you it was like you disappeared into thin air."
"It's what I do best." I mumble.
At least Rylan has the nerve to fix his wrong doing. He's not lying, either. His gaze is affixed on me, steady and sure. I admire his dark blue eyes and how they shimmer in the sun's rays. I quickly remember why I was attracted to him the night in the Three Broomsticks.
"Regardless, I'm sorry. Once I heard you were back, I tried to sneak out of the Gryffindor party, but I was followed." He smirks down at his hands. "I didn't mean to embarrass you or tease you. When I saw you with Sebastian Sallow, how he was looking at you and touching you, I got jealous. It's not excuse, but I want you to know that I didn't mean it."
It's becoming obvious that men become stupid when their envious. I don't understand why Rylan was jealous, though. Sebastian and I will only ever be friends. Him not being here is the only proof I need.
"It's fine," I sigh. "Thank you for apologizing."
"Can we be friends again?"
I scoff at this question. "I didn't know we were friends to begin with. If I recall correctly, we made out, had sex in a dark alley, and then you teased me during truth or dare."
"Sounds pretty normal to me." He nudges into me and we both chuckle. Rylan smiles down at me, and the clouds around in mind start to separate.
