SILENCE, HE WAS GONE.
A low creak sounded from behind the three girls who jumped round in surprise to see the door behind them opening.
"Farewell traveller." Chris whispered, looking back at Dalton.
The three girls had sat down on the carpet around Dalton, determined to protect him from the other side whilst he adventured through 'the further' seeing as they couldn't do much to help him beyond that they sat and discussed their favourite music, Taylor swift's 'Folklore' being Stella's pick (of course with Red being a close second), Lizzie's pick for best album was Little Mix's 'LM5' which she claimed was a 'no skip' album and then Chris' pick being The Weeknd's 'After Hours' specifically the deluxe version.
The trio sat on the floor quietly debating which album was the best, ultimately deciding all three were lyrical masterpieces.
The girls hated that they couldn't do more to help their friend but there was truly nothing they could do other than wait.
Suddenly the room was overtaken by darkness, the girls sprang to their feet as they toggled light switches, Stella rushing to Dalton's side, worried that he had something to do with the sudden loss in power.
Chris attempted to peak outside the door but the handle wouldn't budge, Lizzie went to help her and when neither of them could get it open Stella also rose to her feet and made her way towards them.
However Stella would never reach the two girls as when she tried to get to them, a pressure began to tighten on her neck. Before she could react she was thrown up against the wall, this pressure now intensified and preventing the girl from catching her breath, she scraped and clawed at her neck, begging for air as her airways began to close and her vision was clouded with black dots.
The other two girls yelled out in horror as they tried to reach their friend yet they couldn't move from their spots, it was as if a force field was surrounding her, it couldn't be disturbed and the girls were running out of time. Stella had turned a slight shade of blue and the other two girls were in a state as they watched their friend claw for oxygen.
Stella had never felt as scared as she was in that moment.
Every fight with her parents, every money trouble, every breakup and every loss of friend seemed inconsequential.
This entity didn't only have the power to take her life, but so much more.
In that moment Stella realised that her future was vulnerable. It was never promised, never truly hers. She was never promised tomorrow and all off a sudden that old saying seemed all too real. They say you truly die when your body stops working but in that moment Stella didn't think that was true. Dying meant never having a true future, never graduating college, never having a family, never going on vacation, never getting married, never making your family proud. Dying would be so much more than just a eulogy and a burial. In that moment it felt as though everything her parents had put her through meant nothing. She should've called, she could've tried harder. In what she thought may have been her dying moments, all she could feel was regret. Regret for the words that were never said, regret for the actions never taken and the calls never made.
People tell you that death is like falling asleep, maybe it is, for some at least. But when your life is being ripped from your body there is so much pain and suffering, the mental war in your mind through regret and guilt was taking Stella over and before she knew it everything went black.
Quiet.
Peace.
Tranquil.
She wasn't dead, she knew that. But she also wasn't conscious enough to know much better. Lying on the floor of a teenage boys bedroom the world seemed to go quiet for a moment. She could hear the people around her screaming her name in desperate voices. She felt selfish for enjoying the peace in her mind. The war had settled and for a moment the warmth that trickled through her body was enough to keep her alive.
She roused slightly as her eyes began to flutter open, she was in someone's arms. She didn't know who but she knew that it was a comforting feeling. When she adjusted her eyes to the light she looked up to see the distraught faces of her friends around her, the girls on either side and Dalton holding her in his arms.
She had survived.
