Staying

"Do you ever wish you were a Barbie?" Barbie asked.

"What do you mean?" Gloria asked.

"I mean, do you wish you could go live in BarbieLand where you would get to live a perfect life, whatever you would want that to look like?"

"Is that even possible?" Gloria asked.

"If I can become human, then I don't see why it can't also work the other way around," Barbie said.

"I guess," Gloria said.

"So would you want to do it?"

"I don't know," Gloria said. "Probably not."

"Why not?"

"Because I think there's more to life than having it be perfect. Of course I wish things were better, but I don't want to leave now. I've spent my whole life here. I have a daughter. I can't just leave. Even though things suck sometimes, I know I have to stay."

"So, do you think that I should have stayed a doll?" Barbie asked.

"No, of course not," Gloria said. "I just don't want to be one."

Barbie nodded. "It's kind of nice being real. I don't know what it is, though."

"There really is a strange appeal," Gloria agreed. "But sometimes it seems much nicer to be a Barbie, even though I know I really can't be one."

"It was easier back then," Barbie said. "But I like how things are now, too."

Gloria nodded. "I would still like to change things."

"That's part of why I came here, wasn't it, though?" Barbie said. "To change what I couldn't as a doll. What I maybe caused as a doll."

"Yes, I suppose it was," Gloria said.
