A soft breeze blew through Link's golden locks and Sidon's floppy hair fins.
"First of all," the king began, staring ahead. "I am sorry if I said anything out of line earlier. I was not feeling myself."
"Hey, it's alright," Link reassured. "You're the king now, which means you can do and say whatever you want."
He released a puff of air. "Well, sort of, not really. Everyone is looking up to me now. I will be heavily scrutinized."
"Yeah, but who cares what they think?"
"I do, Link. Do you know what I would give to have the power you do? To do as I please and not be trapped by my destiny and position?"
"Uh, Sidon, I've known nothing but servitude, what do you mean? I'm bound to Zelda's every whim whether I want to be around that bitch or no—" He put a hand over his mouth, then cleared his throat.
Sidon looked at him quickly. "You are displeased with Zelda?"
"No, no," he said quickly, then, "Well... okay, yes. I am more than displeased. Everyone thinks I'm supposed to be sad she's gone again, but I only feel relief. I have my own house again, and it's not as nice as my old place in Hateno, but I finally get to do what I want without her dragging me along to run all her useless errands. I have an actual bed again. My horses live right outside, it's beautiful, and I get to see Granteson's half shirtless bod out my window every morning as he mucks out the stalls."
"Who's Granteson?"
His face turned red. "Uh, no one."
"You have never mentioned this man before."
"He's just my neighbor!" he said too loudly.
"It's alright, Link," Sidon said calmly. "You do not owe me an explanation. It's really not my place to pry into your love life—"
"It's not my—Listen, just so you know, Granteson wanted something more serious, but I turned him down, so... that's that."
"Oh." The king feigned disinterest. "What happened?"
"Uh, well..." He rubbed the back of his arm, then sighed. "I was still getting over... a different guy, so after Granteson and I..." he cleared his throat again loudly before adding in a low mumble, "hooked up, I realized it couldn't be serious and I didn't want to lead Granteson on unfairly, so I turned him down. We're just friends now, like, professional work colleagues, you know?"
"Ah." There was something hidden in the subdued features. "I am sorry it didn't work out."
"Don't be. It's not like I'm heartbroken or anything."
"You aren't?"
"No. He was a rebound. My feelings for this other guy are... ahem, totally different." Maybe he needed a cough drop or something.
"This other guy... do I know him?"
"Uh, pfft." He tried to play it cool, but it was a critical failure. "Does it matter? You have your own relationship to worry about."
"Oh. Yes. Of course." He hesitated, then heaved his own little sigh. "That is just it. Yona is the last person I ever want to think about, but you..." Their eyes met, and Link found himself frozen on the spot by that gaze. "It's been so many years and yet, you, Link, are all that I can think of sometimes. In the dead of night. When the breeze is calm and quiet on the hill. When I am to be attending to my royal duties. I remember our times together when my chest felt so light, I was soaring. No one has brought me more joy than you, dear friend."
He took Link's hand in his, reminding the Hylian that he was still alive and awake and not a ghost watching his dream-self have these things said to him. "I am glad you have more freedom now. I am, and it pleases me that you are enjoying your life, but I wish I could be a part of it."
