ʙᴇɪɴɢ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ᴏɴ ᴄᴏʀᴜꜱᴄᴀɴᴛ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄɪʀᴄᴜᴍꜱᴛᴀɴᴄᴇꜱ ᴀꜱ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴡᴇʀᴇ was a feeling unlike any other.
Obi-Wan had met me at my door this morning at sunrise. We'd spent the night apart, healing and getting some rest after the events of Geonosis. Then, with a meeting scheduled with Master Windu this morning, we'd taken a stroll over to the Council Chambers together, taking our sweet time. That, I think, we deserved, after what we'd been through for the past couple of days.
It was a nice little walk. For such an early morning, there were few people in the halls. That meant he was able to wrap his arm around me with no repercussions, holding me close and giving me little kisses on the top of my head as we walked. We talked in low voices, and I would laugh and put my head on his shoulder. It was an amazing feeling, and one of the best mornings I'd had in a long time. Especially after that abysmal morning we'd had just a couple of days earlier when we'd met accidentally on the roof.
"It's strange," I mused to Obi-Wan as we neared the Council Chambers. He'd let go of me, turning to face me and brushing a stray piece of hair out of my face. "How far we've come, I mean. Just a couple of days ago, we were at each other's throats on that roof."
Obi-Wan laughed, pulling me into a soft embrace. "We were always at each other's throats, weren't we?"
"I suppose we were trying to make up for the very obvious tension between the two of us."
"Even when other people weren't there?"
"We were trying to fool ourselves, too," I reminded him. "Look at how that turned out."
He laughed again, cradling my head against his chest. "Apparently, we just can't help ourselves."
"Apparently not." I pulled away, smiling up at him. His blue eyes were looking down at me in pure adoration, reflecting the way I was currently feeling as I stared up at him. He grabbed my chin and pulled me in, kissing me softly.
"I love you," he whispered as he pulled away, leaning his forehead against mine.
"I love you," I repeated.
When we entered the Council Chambers, Master Windu was already there, glancing out of the window towards the sunrise. It really was beautiful, I noted, but I hadn't really noticed it on the way here.
"Kenobi. Hollbar," Master Windu greeted us, not tearing his eyes away from the window. He was leaning against one of the pillars, carefully keeping his weight off of his leg. It seemed to still be ailing him, similar to Kera's injury. I pretended not to notice. If there was one thing I knew about Master Windu, it was that he did not like other people pointing out his weaknesses.
"Good morning, Master," Obi-Wan and I chorused, carefully putting several feet of space between us.
Master Windu was silent for a few moments, then finally turned to face the two of us, breaking the silence. "I wanted to check up on the two of you," he said. "Yoda went to see Anakin early this morning, to check in after the surgery. You two are doing good?"
"Just fine, Master," I agreed. "My injuries are mostly subdued, thanks to the healing team. I'm still a little shaken from my encounter with my..." my voice faded out. I glanced to Obi-Wan for support, and he nodded, a soft smile on his face. I swallowed, his encouragement giving me confidence. "With Jobal." I took a deep, shaky breath before continuing. "But I'll be fine. Just give me time."
The Jedi Master nodded and turned to Obi-Wan. "And you, Kenobi?"
"My leg and arm are still a little stiff. Otherwise, I'm doing good." He hesitated as Master Windu stared at him. "It's kind of you to check in on us." I nodded in agreement, both of us waiting for him to get to his point.
