Angel Huxley Novak
Make sure to vote!My phone hasn't stopped ringing all morning, and the constant disturbance finally gets to the point where my dad slams my door open, breaking the tranquility of my slumber. "Answer the damn phone, Angel! I'm tryna get my beauty sleep," he grumbles, and I groan, rubbing the sleep from my eyes as I grab my phone from the bedside table.
An unknown caller flashes on the screen. I furrow my brows but decide to answer anyway, curious about who could be calling me at this hour.
"Hello? Is this Angel?" a female voice inquires.
"Speaking," I reply, my voice still laced with sleepiness.
"Angel, um, my name is Christina. I'm calling about a fellowship." My eyes widen, and all traces of sleepiness are suddenly gone.
"Hi, Christina," I say, sitting up straighter, my heart pounding with anticipation.
"Hey, well, I got a good word in actually from your professors, and after looking at your recent work, I want to offer you a fellowship." My breath catches in my throat, and I can hardly believe what I'm hearing.
"W-I-seriously?" I stammer in disbelief.
"Yes, seriously," Christina confirms warmly. "We just had a student drop out, and we need to fill their placement quickly. Are you willing-"
"Yes! Yes, I am!" I interrupt eagerly, unable to contain my excitement.
"Okay, great to hear your enthusiasm, but don't you want to hear the rest?" Christina chuckles.
"Right, sorry. I got a bit excited," I admit, trying to contain my enthusiasm.
"No worries, love. So, the placement is in New York, for the Atlantic division team," she says, and my heart skips a beat.
New York. The Atlantic division. This is the opportunity I've been dreaming of, the chance to finally achieve my dream and become an official doctor.
And to forget about the past.
"I can't believe it," I breathe, my voice trembling with emotion. "Thank you so much, Christina. This means the world to me."
"You're very welcome, Angel. We're excited to have you on board. The details and paperwork will be emailed to you shortly. Congratulations, and welcome to the team!" Christina's warm voice fills my ears, and I can hardly contain my joy.
"Thank you!" I reply, my heart racing with excitement.
"However, we do need you to move full time to New York. You'll be working every day with the team, conducting their physio check-ups, and I'll explain the rest when I see you. Would it be possible for you to move by this Friday?"
Two days? My mind races, but I know this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
"Yes, yes it will," I reply confidently.
"Great, and don't worry - flight tickets, housing and a car will be part of your fellowship, fully paid," Christina assures me.
As I hang up the phone, my heart overflows with a mixture of joy and gratitude. I leap out of bed and rush down the stairs of the attic, filled with a newfound energy. "Dad!" I call out loudly, pushing open his bedroom door as he startles awake, throwing his sleeping mask to the floor.
"This better be a damn good reason-" he starts, but my words tumble out before I can even catch my breath.
"I got a fellowship!" I exclaim, unable to contain my excitement. Tears glisten in my dad's eyes, and he engulfs me in a tight hug, his embrace filled with pride and happiness.
