Chapter 6.
William Dayton and Jack Sloan were in office drinking coffee and debating on their next line of action. Just then Katherine Cooper came in and pulled up a chair next to them, "What are you guys debating about?"
Sloan replied, "We have found a pattern and a fingerprint, none of which is of much help. So we are wondering what do we do next."
Katherine said, "Umm... Can I give you guys an idea?"
Both of them replied simultaneously, "Yes."
Katherine said, "Okay. Have you guys given a thought that the killer could be a clinical lycanthrope? You know suffer from this delusion that he is a wolf. You could visit some asylums or institutions around New York and ask if they have had any cases of lycanthropy. Or even ask the victims' parents and neighbours if they have heard of any such thing."
Dayton brightened up on hearing this and said, "Yeah we never thought on those lines. You are damn right we are going to check out these places. Thanks a ton Kath."
Sloan joined in, "Yeah thanks so much!"
Katherine waved her hand and said, "Common guys what are friends for huh?"
"Okay then I hope we get some positive leads." Sloan said and both of them left office in search of their lycanthrope.

After visiting a dozen places, they got just one lead. A 17 year old high school boy named Dylan Reynolds suffering from supposed lycanthropy, admitted at the Cosgrove Institute for Mental Sickness for 3 months, cutting out the chances of him being the killer. One look at him would make it obvious that he was not the killer; a tall lanky boy obsessed with twilight and teen wolf and thinking that he was a werewolf and that his soul was that of a wolf and not a human.
Talking to all the victims' parents and neighbours turned up nothing. Most of them said that their own kids were acting like lycanthropes, cribbing about owning super powers and becoming werewolves or vampires.
With this lead also turning to naught, they became desperate for new leads. And the next new moon was just a few days away; another kill waiting to happen and they did not know what to do.
****************
It was a clear moonless night, the day of the new moon. Cops were on high alert in all public areas around New York City, in anticipation of the killer to strike. Dayton could feel the current in the air, all of them had their fingers crossed hoping to lord that they would catch him tonight.
But the lord had other plans I guess because the next morning another body was found and there was hysteria among the common public that the police wasn't doing anything to stop the murders....
