It became apparent, after a while, to the other residents of the manor that Elisa was avoiding them. Always way too politely refusing their requests and spending all of her time reading the select book in Ancient Greek that Bruce had gotten placed in the library after becoming aware that Elisa's dyslexia did not apply to Greek.

Elisa ate quickly, making little to no conversation before getting up to wash her dishes, despite Alfred's attempts at refusal but stubbornness was Elisa's forte, and speed up the stairs to her room.

Elisa had taken up drawing recently in an effort to avoid the others.

The only issue is that she definitely underestimated the patience and stubbornness of the other residents. Dick would have hour conversations with her even when her only responses were nods or even shakes of her head.

In truth, Elisa was too afraid to get attached to them to try to bond. She would eventually go back to camp, to where a demigod like her belonged. They all seemed to care about her but she knew first hand that appearances could be deceiving. She learned that from dealing with King Minos.

"Maybe you're being too cautious." Will Solace had remarked when she explained the issue, unaware of the audience outside of her locked door.

"How can I be too cautious about this?" Elisa replied, a frown tugging at her lips. "Of course, some part of me is grateful for being "adopted" I guess but its unnecessary. I have been relatively on my own for years. I do not need adult supervision or any sort of rich life style." Elisa seemed to frown even more, nearly scowling. "I can't really afford not being cautious with the shit we have to put up with."

"Wasn't your mom rich?" Will asked, snickering at her disgruntled tone.

Elisa shrugged as her unknown audience exchanged looks. "I don't know, maybe? I still can't remember much of her. Only what H- Dad told us." Elisa flopped back with a distant look on her face. "What does it matter? It's not like we'll ever have access to it. I was fine before."

"Living off of McDonald's?"

"I was not living off of McDonald's! I just liked their burgers, okay? You're being awfully rude right now, I'm here for advice." Elisa shut her eyes. "The truth will come out eventually but i can't even begin to contemplate my options. Should I at least try to let them get to know me? Or should I just save myself and try to run away. Jersey isn't that far from Long Island, I'm sure it would be fine."

Not that far??? Jason wanted to burst in and shake Elisa until she came to her senses. Not that far?! It's 94 miles to get to Long Island.

"Well, not everyone is out to get you and from what I hear, they just want to help you. Why not give it a shot?" Will mused, leaning back into his chair inside the infirmary. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Dick and Tim stopped on their way past to join Jason on eavesdropping on the phone call.

Elisa let out a loud, sarcastic laugh. "Ha! Famous last words." She scoffed, her eyes darting towards the door as she felt them at the words. "I have to go, thanks for the free session, doc." She ended the call quickly before yanking the door open, raising an eyebrow down at the pile of three batboys.

They didn't even get to say their excuses as she walked past them, rolling her eyes as she descended the stairs.

"Wait," Tim shouted, catching up to Elisa as she descended the stairs. "Who was that, on the phone?" He tried to act casual, like he wasn't eager to know everything about her that wasn't on file.

Elisa paused at the top of the steps, looking at Tim before glancing towards Jason and Dick who had just caught up and then looking down the stairs as Bruce, Damian, and Cass who were watching. Irritation crossed her features as she stared at Tim. "Why does it matter?" She asked, her bad mood becoming evident. "My life is none of your business."

"We can't protect you if you don't let us." Dick, ever the voice of reason, tried to stress to her, only to flinch back as irritated black eyes stared at him.

Elisa frowned as she tilted her head to the side. "I don't need protection, I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. We're not a family, so there's no need to act all buddy-buddy with me." She hissed at them before storming away down the other hall, hiding away in the closest room as the door slammed loudly behind her.

They all flinched as the slam shook the rest of the house and Tim stared after her with a dejected look. They all knew she was closed off but this was worse than they thought.

Her records were missing too much, just what was going on?

Elisa pressed her back to the locked door as she slid on the ground, frustrated tears filling her eyes. She pressed her hands into her face.

Gods, why was she so fucking stupid? Their kindness had been nice but now she was doubting herself.

When people are kind, it's because they want something. Bianca's words echoed in her ears. So, don't let anyone ever take advantage of you. Even if that makes you the meanest person they know. Don't let anyone take advantage of you or your kind nature, sweet sister. Her words echoed in her ears.

She stared at the ground with a conflicted look in her eyes. They all seemed so genuine in their actions and words but people were full of deception, she was aware of that.

Elisa bit her lips as a conflict stirred inside her. Were they being nice or was it all just fake? Just pretty words with no meaning at all? Actions with no meaning?

I won't let myself be deceived any longer, Elisa decided with a frown on her face. People are kind until they're not, I won't let myself be ensnared in this tangled web.

Elisa's already guarded heart only became more closed off as she decided to protect herself against people who might or might not care for her.
