the first day of school finally rolled around the corner, and to say amaya was dreading it would be an understatement. she had tried every excuse known to man, stomach bug, migraine, period pain, but joey was not having it.

"wake up amaya, school today!" joey cheerfully rapped on amaya's bedroom door, just to hear a disheartened groan back.

"hey, no need to be so depressing. you'll be fine, and plus i made pancakes!" that was enough to get amaya to roll out of bed and scurry downstairs to the kitchen where, sure enough, there was a plate of fluffy pancakes waiting for her, adorned with maple syrup and bacon.

"joey, you know me too well." she babbled, already stuffing her face. he chuckled at how stupid she looked.

"i try."

"still, this bribery is not going to convince me to go to that shithole today." she shrugged.

"hey, come on. you haven't even been yet. you might love it, you never know."

amaya burst out laughing, splattering the table with pancake crumbs. she gathered herself and brushed the surface with her sleeve.

"yeah, yeah, whatever you say. i KNOW i'm gonna fucking hate it and there's nothing you can do."

"you may hate it, but you're going. twenty minutes and i want you out that door. go!" she groaned again and stomped up the stairs. the entire time she was getting ready she thought about any possible ways that she could get out of school with, but in the end she was stuck with the ER or nothing and she didn't fancy a trip to the hospital on a monday morning, despite how much she hated school. when she finally trudged down the stairs at 8:35, joey let out a cheer.

"yeahhh there she is! now out, and if i catch you ditching i will personally walk you to the gates for the rest of the week." her cousin smiled wide at her; she rolled her eyes but couldn't help chuckling at his cheeriness.

"see you later joey, if i don't have detention already." she made her way towards the front door.

"alright kid, have fun!"

"i won't!" she yelled back before closing the door behind her and heading off to school.

amaya let out a deep breath before trudging through the school gates. she looked around, confused as to why it was so quiet. she soon realised that she had spent so long walking to school, that she was over ten minutes late for class. she walked quickly to reception and pressed the bell repeatedly.

"alright little lady, i'm coming. calm down." a woman rolled her chair over to the window that amaya was standing behind and peered at her over her glasses.

"well, there's a face i haven't seen before. you new?"

"yep, and obviously not on time. can i please have my schedule?" amaya tapped on the wooden table impatiently.

"sure honey. what's the full name?" the receptionist lady turned to a large computer on the right side of her.

"amaya litchman."

"ah, i see. here you go, math first, classes are straight down that corridor and left." the woman passed her a thin sheet of paper through the slot underneath the glass window.

"thanks." amaya rushed off through the large wooden doors and as she turned left round a corner, she felt herself colliding with something. it turned out to be a person.

"hey, watch it!" the person scoffed and stumbled backwards.

"jesus, can you mind out the way?" amaya asked, annoyed, as she glanced up at the person in front of her. a white boy with cornrows, not a great first impression of the school, she thought.

"what you fucking running around here for anyways, you crazy?" he peered down at her. "hey, i ain't seen you before, you new?" he asked, looking her up and down with a smirk on his face. amaya scoffed.

"hey, my eyes are up here, and yeah i'm new and obviously late, so if you could stop blocking the hall i'll be on my way." she made an attempt to push past him but he moved to stand in front of her.

"not so fast girl. i didn't get your name." he tilted his head, grinning at her.

"probably because i don't feel like giving it to you." she tried to push past him again, but he was strong and kept her where she was by placing a steady hand on her shoulder. she shoved it off with a scoff.

"come on now, don't be like that. don't you wanna make friends?" he taunted.

"not with you, cornrows." she finally managed to push past him and made her way down the hall.

"see you round girl." he called after her with a smirk. she turned around to flip him off and continued walking. great, she thought, not even ten minutes in the school and i already hate someone.
