amaya already felt at home in the south side, and when saturday morning rolled around she was excited to party with debbie.
she was greeted with a plate of pancakes at the breakfast table when she finally made her way downstairs.
"for surviving your first week at school with only one detention." her cousin smiled at her. "good job amaya."
she grinned at him and grabbed the plate. "thanks joey, it wasn't too bad to be fair."
he chuckled. "i'm glad."
"hey, can i go to a party tonight?"
joey laughed. "wow, one week at high school and you're already partying? i'm impressed." she grinned at him.
"what can i say, people just love me."
"who's invited you to this then? or are you just showing up on your own accord."
"debbie gallagher. she lives two blocks down." amaya stood up to put her empty plate in the sink.
"a gallagher? you met lip?" joey turned to look at her, intrigued.
"yeah, the one from the aa meetings. debbie said you might know him."
"yeah, he's a good guy. he told me about the meetings in the first place. hey, if you see him again, tell him you're living with joey."
amaya looked confused. "yeah, sure. anyways, can i go?"
"oh yeah, yeah sure. just be careful. no coming back here plastered drunk and higher than the empire state." he raised his eyebrows at her. she laughed out loud.
"well, guess i'm sleeping somewhere else then."
"alright, if you insist. well, message me. tell me where you are."
"yeah, don't worry. i'll probably stay at debbie's."
"okay sure, message me anyways. and remember, joeys cousin!" he yelled after amaya as she ran up the stairs to get ready.
"yep, living with the weird guy from the AA meetings!" she yelled back. joey chuckled.
as soon as amaya stepped into the house at the address debbie had given her later that evening, she was engulfed with the smell of weed and alcohol.
"hey girl, over here!" she heard debbie shout over by a kitchen island. amaya made her way over to her, pushing past sweaty bodies and kicking over red cups in the process.
"this is the fanciest house i've seen on the south side!" amaya shouted over all the music.
"yeah, that's jocelyn for you. her dad owns a liquor store or something." amaya nodded.
"hey, you got any more of that?" amaya gestured to the red cup in debbie's hand, with a drop of alcoholic liquid left.
"oh yeah, come with me." she grabbed amaya's hand and led her to a table covered in red cups and various bottles. she picked up a large bottle of vodka and attempted to pour it into a glass. wow, amaya thought, she is drunk already.
"hey, pass it to me. you're not gonna be very popular at this party if you keep spilling the drinks all over the floor." amaya laughed, taking the bottle from debbie's hand.
"oh yeah, thanksss" debbie slurred. "hey, once you've done that, come over to me and gavin. we're getting litttt." she giggled, walking away from amaya to a boy sitting on the couch, waving to her. amaya shook her head and laughed. she really loved debbie, but god, she was crazy at parties.
as amaya began to pour liquid into her cup, she felt an arm snake around her waist. she turned quickly to see who it was and shoved him off immediately.
"hey maya, funny seeing you here." carl looked down at her with a smirk. she hated his smirk.
"yeah sure carl, i thought you weren't invited." amaya rolled her eyes at him, annoyed.
"nah, anyone will let me come if i give them oral." carl chuckled. amaya looked at him, disgusted.
"shut up carl."
"no need to get jealous maya, i can do you too later." he winked at her, laughing.
"i think i'd rather not."
he looked her up and down, before grabbing the cup from her hand and taking a sip. she snatched it back from him and walked off, only for him to follow.
"woah, straight vodka? careful maya, don't want to have to carry you home."he grinned at her.
"can you not follow me carl? don't you have other people to annoy?"
"yeah, but, none of them are as hot as you."
she ignored his comment and continued pushing past people until she found debbie, passed out on the sofa.
"god debs, i've only been here ten minutes." amaya looked at the boy slouched next to her. "how much did you give her?"
he shrugged. "she don't take her vodka very well. you want some?" he offered her a cup but she refused.
"no, one of us has to stay mildly sober i guess." she replied, discarding her cup on the coffee table and heaving one of debbie's arms onto her shoulder. she noticed that carl had still been following her.
"hey, if you're gonna keep following me everywhere at least make yourself useful. grab her other arm."
he rolled his eyes but rested debbie's other arm onto his shoulder and helped amaya to take her outside and wake her up.
"hey, debs. drink this." amaya shoved a water bottle into debbie's half-awake face. she mumbled something but grabbed the bottle and chugged it.
"jesus deb, how much did you drink?" carl looked at her, eyebrows raised.
"like a little, i think, maybe." debbie slurred. "hey, where's gavin?"
"not here, thank god." amaya shook her head.
"i'm not going home you know, i'm staying." debbie tried to stumble inside. amaya knew she should take her home, but debbie would refuse and she didn't feel like losing her only friend so soon to a small disagreement.
"alright then, but i'm not leaving you on your own again." amaya ran to walk beside her, debbie using her as support. carl sped up to join them.
"well, if maya's not leaving, then i guess i'm staying too." he smirked. again.
"fucks sake carl, stop with the stupid smirk. you can leave, go find other sluts to suck on your dick." amaya pushed him away.
"don't worry, i'll find you later, when you're too drunk to hate me." he winked at her and jogged off. she rolled her eyes and helped debbie inside.
