3 - A Broken Soul

Somehow Luke seemed to be an expert in these woods, even though it all looked the same to Michael.

Well it did make sense in theory, since they lived out there. But with him already getting lost in it last night, it was still a curious sight to see Luke move throughout the woods like it was an ordinary walk through town.

"This should be where Ashton found you." Luke finally said, referencing to the area in front of them.

"How do you know that?" Michael asked confused.

He saw Luke look down at him, gazing at his eyes just like Ashton did.

"Just an estimated guess based on what Ashton told me."

Michael hesitantly nodded his head before looking around the area for his phone.

"Could you call me? So the ringer will go off?" Michael asked once he couldn't find it.

"I don't have one."

"You don't have a phone?" Michael asked ridiculously.

Luke chuckled from Michael's shocked expression, "Today's obsession with electronics...No, I don't have a phone. I refer the 'old school' type of communication."

"And what's this old school type of communication you speak of?" Michael huffed, crossing his arms.

"It's called speaking face-to-face in person."

"Oh wow. You sound like my grandpa."

Michael looked around again and much to his dismay, he couldn't find his phone anywhere. He sighed out, "I can't find it."

"Can't you just get another one?"

"Yes, but..." Michael paused, not knowing if he should really unload his problems to a man he just met in the middle of the woods.

"But?"

"Money is tight right now." He finally said. He was good at budgeting, but he's been going through his savings with his efforts to find Stacey. Whether its printing out missing papers or bribing the local McDonald's manager to let him see their tapes...Michael has been trying everything and anything to at least get a sight of his sister.

"Hmmm." Luke hummed out, "Well what kind of phone did you have?"

"An iPhone 14 pro."

"Hopefully it will turn up."

"In the middle of the woods?" Michael quirked a teasing look towards Luke, making the blonde man grin at the mortal.

He found himself locking his eyes with the man and trying to figure out what there was to Michael, just like Ashton had.

"How about I get you home?"

In the distance, Luke stood in the darkness of the outside while his sharp blue eyes were latched onto a specific man.

He felt the sudden presence of his two companions, but he didn't pay any attention to them. All of his attention was on Michael who was sat down at his kitchen table inside his house, organizing the missing papers he picked up just before.

"What are you doing out here? We had to come hunt you down after you didn't come back. Thought the little mortal staked you." Calum said.

"I'm watching him." He said, keeping his eyes on the said mortal.

"This is where he lives?" Ashton asked, making Luke nod.

It was a small house in the middle of a crowded neighborhood. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't the best thing in the world.

"Why are you watching him?" Calum asked.

"There's something...to him. I can't explain it."

"Luke at a loss of words? Wow. I think the last time this happened was when you latched your neck onto Einstein."

"You feel it too, huh?" Ashton asked.

Luke finally let his eyes off Michael, looking at Ashton.

"He's different."

"He is."

"How?" Calum asked, being the only one who hasn't spoken to the man.

"See tomorrow once it's daytime." Ashton said, "Run into him in the streets."

"Who says he'll be running around?"

"He looks pretty busy." Luke answered, "Those are missing person posters."

"Missing person..." Ashton said, "He's a broken soul."

"He didn't seem like it today with me." Luke answered, "He seemed happy."

Luke wasn't necessarily right or wrong. Even Michael was thinking about how different he felt with Luke.

Ever since Stacey went missing he's been stressed and worried. But being with Luke for a mere hour made him feel better. It sounded selfish, but Michael forgot about his worries of his sister when he was with Luke. He was socializing and laughing with a good person who seemed to pull him in.

But now Michael was back to his real life. He had to keep looking for Stacey.
