A/n: so I decide to make the traveler they/them, just seems easier. although they will be called Traveler. If anyone is confused during the story, I will be making a list of headcanons and other things I intend to use in the story but don't be shy to ask if you need me to clarify something. I have also finally started studying so updates may be every few days. I also apologise for any spelling mistakes that may occur. My glasses broke again so I'm writing this semi-blind.

3 years before Traveler arrives in Mondstadt

"The Known, the Unknown, and the Unknowable. Akivili..."

"What an odd dream." I mumble out, my eyes study the stack of papers on my hand. "Those words... have I heard before?"

The loud sound of the pristine white doors to my office opening too fast disrupt my thoughts. Glancing up quickly, I had a second to recognise the intruder before they begin speaking. "Amaryllis! I finally got a job for you. It's not quite what you're expecting but I'll be able to see you more often." Furina sits in the vacant seat on the other side of my desk, leaning back in it.

14 years ago, Furina let me stay with her. Thanks to her, I've been able to study to my heart's content. I just made a possible breakthrough last night before passing out due to how late it was. Will I finally have the knowledge to prevent that particular incident? In theory, it is possible. Furina lazily looks around my office, the multitude of bookshelves littered with hand-picked books of all kind of genres.

The simple chandelier providing the adequate required lighting as my office doesn't have any visible windows. My desk is covered in books and handwritten papers in which reflect the many years of research I have pursued. The door behind me leads to my living quarters which is I rarely use as I always seem to fall asleep at my desk. "I already see you most of the day. Yet, you have piqued my interest. Continue."

"You will be the Substitutus Iudex of Fontaine." Furina smiles mischievously, silently giggling to the look of shock on my face.

A substitute judge, there has never been one ever. It is true that the Iudex of Fontaine is quite busy that he doesn't have time to attend every trial. It's even a wonder Furina does it. Although she is an Archon, she can't have possibly be in two places at once. I'm shocked she even suggested such a role. "Lady Furina, is this an actual job or are you playing another prank on me?" I try my best not to sound rude, there's no way she could have done it.

Yet, she is the Archon. "Of course it is, I even speak with the Chief Justice, he thinks it's a great idea as well. Not only that, I managed to get you two jobs. Substitutus Iudex is your main job, but when you're not presiding over a trial, you'll assist the Chief Justice in court with information. As you already know, your knowledge is unmatched." She laughs to herself, thinking of all the potential cases we could be in together.

Her thirst for justice is unrivaled. "Very well, I do have to pay you back for the 14 years you have helped me." I sigh, trying not to yawn. 'What should I do first?"

"You start tomorrow, but for now, we're going to go watch a trial. You'll need to meet the Chief Justice and understand his role so you may do yours." I watch as she gets up and begins to walk over to the doors.

I grab the notes that I was looking over last night and hurry to catch up with the Hydro Archon. "Amaryllis, should we go by the boutique? I want to see if there's anything new." A few of the Gardes fall into position behind us.

"If you wish to, I'll accompany you Lady Furina. But I prefer to wear my usual clothes, comfort over style." I wear the same outfit I have since I was little, the only thing that has changed is that I now wear a tight, short black skirt under the tailcoat that I used to mistake for a dress.
