"Here comes trouble."
TEMPEST HAD TRIED HER BEST. Her very, very best over the last seventeen years to resist the pull in her chest that made it feel like she couldn't breathe. To stop herself from migrating toward the key knowing she would be the death of that girl whether she liked it or not.
Her curse was a fickle thing. And the woman had spent the last thousand years watching as every time she met the woman crowned in rose-gold she unwittingly led them to their untimely deaths because of it.
The first key had died because of Tempest's naivete. The second had died because of her foolishness. The third had gone because of her mistakes. And the fourth had passed because of her trust.
Tempest had gained enough control over herself, obtained enough will power and strength to not cross paths with the fifth. She did not want to cause any one else's death, hadn't wanted to become any more of a monster than she already was.
But this time...it felt different. More potent.
And despite the fact that Tempest had enough control to hold off her more brazen urges, the need to be close to the key was stronger than her iron will. So, as much as she had tried her hardest as her resolve shredded into no more than a fraying string, she had been pulled to the South no more than six months ago.
Thankfully, being in the Elantine Empire seemed to be enough to take the edge off her curse, satiate some sort need. Her mind had calmed down as if a storm had finally passed over a raging sea.
Despite the relief she felt as she entered the Meridian Empire...Tempest hated being back to the place she had been born. Memories seemed to consume her entirely, good and bad. Both made something in her chest ache.
Of course, she had tried to push away the steady cracking of her heart as she thought about the past. But it still seemed to make an appearance, try as she might.
So she distracted herself with other things.
Tempest wasn't ashamed to say she enjoyed living in luxury; she adored expensive clothes and jewelry, she enjoyed looking good and feeling good, she liked it when people looked at her. Meaning that the first thing she did was befriend Empress Scarlett and Princess Donatella by purposefully implanting herself in their paths.
She befriended them—and both she actually liked—charmed them into liking her. And with a bit of work, they offered her a place in their empire.
Which was the exact reason Tempest now sat having tea in the Royal Hummingbird Court with the two sisters, the three girls laughing about something random as Tempest winked at Donatella before taking a sip from her cup. Empress Scarlett had called her here for reasons unknown. Despite that, the three girls had seemed to have gotten a bit off track.
