Seeing things

*Robert's POV*

I watched intently as my fourth period class filed in. I sighed not seeing Lauren again. Four days, now since I had last seen her. I took roll and stopped at Lauren's name.

"Has anyone seen or heard from Lauren lately?" I looked around the room one last time to make sure I wasn't over looking her.

"I heard she died!" Missy Miller commented a gleeful look on her face. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her and settled on a disapproving look.

"Does anyone have any correct information?"

Ethan raised his hand shyly. "I do but I would rather say it in private."

I nodded glad someone didn't want to gossip about her. I set the class to read the newest play and opened my door. I gestured for Ethan to follow me into the empty hallway. "So, what do you know Mr. Smith?"

"She's not dead but, she is in the hospital."

"Why is she in the hospital?"

Ethan looked down at the floor. "Well she did something really stupid, I don't know if I should tell you. I only know what happened because she called me. She didn't sound like herself though."

I felt my heart sink. "Smith, so help me god what happened to Lauren? What did she do?"

"Downey! There you are! It's hard as hell to find your class." General Rogers boomed out walking towards me.

"General Rogers what a surprise. Smith go take your seat." I waited until Ethan was back in class before turning to General Rogers. He looked worn out and sad. "What can I help you with General?"

"Lauren won't be back in school for a long while." The general started fiddling with the marine cover in his hands. "She tried to commit suicide Monday night."

My eyes widened in shock. "Are you serious? Is she alright now?"

"When do you have a free period?" General Rogers started looking around nervously.

"Not until after this class. Lunch is next and than I have a free period." I looked around and spotted Jeremy Harris, a math teacher. "Hey Harris can you keep an eye on my class right now while I speak with a parent in private?"

Jeremy nodded and offered to let us use his empty classroom. I lead General Rogers to the empty classroom. "So, what happened?"

"She took a whole bottle of pain killers and cut herself very deep. That Smith kid claims she called him and he showed up at my house at two am."

I felt sick to my stomach. Did she try to commit suicide because I had said we couldn't be together? God, what if this was my fault. "Why would she do that? I know she was upset about her breakup but, I didn't think she was that depressed."
