CHAPTER THREE

"Dear God, please let me have an amazing performance with my fellow Glee Clubbers," Kamila says with her eyes shut and her hands folded, "Please help my Great-Aunt Lily get better since she needed that kidney. And lastly... please give me a killer ass."

"That's enough, Kamila," Her mother scolds, "Let's keep our prayers appropriate."

Kamila rolls her eyes, "Alright, fine, whatever."

"You better get out of here," Her mom warns, "You'll miss the bus."

"Okay," Kamila smiles, kissing her mom on the cheek, "Love you, mama."

"Love you too," She answers, "What is it your Glee friends say? Break a leg?"

Kamila chuckles, "Yeah. Thanks, mom."

"I have something to say," Finn Hudson declares, standing from his seat.

The group shifts their attention to him, as he moves to where Mr. Schue stands.

"Something happened to me," Finn explains, "And it's shaken me to my core."

"Oh my God," Puck says, "He's coming out."

"Why, yes."

Kamila widens her eyes, "What?"

"There is a man who has recently come into my life," Finn tells the group, "And his name is Jesus Christ."

"That's way worse," Puck responds.

"And I know a lot of people in here dig him too," Finn continues, "So I thought we could pay a tribute to him this week. In music."

"If I wanted to sing about Jesus, I'd go to church," Kurt speaks up.

Kamila shrugs, "It doesn't have to just be about Jesus. It could be about anything spiritual that we strongly believe in."

"Yeah," Mercedes agrees, "I don't see anything wrong with getting a little church in here."

"The reason I don't go to church is because they don't think very highly of gay people," Kurt interjects, "Or women. Or science."

"I agree with Kamila and Mercedes," Says Quinn, "I've had a really hard year, and I turned to God a lot for help. I, for one, wouldn't mind saying thanks."

"Thanks for what?" Santana furrows her eyebrows, "That it didn't come out a lizard baby?"

"Whenever I pray, I fall asleep," Brittany adds.

Mr. Schue speaks up, "I like what Kamila said. Our songs don't have to solely be about Jesus. We could do songs about spirituality."

Kamila nods, "Exactly."

•••

Kurt's father, Burt Hummel, suffered a heart attack while Kurt had simply been in French class.

The one thing Kurt does not want is for anyone to pray for him, or worse, for Mercedes to sing to him about God.

"Thank you, Mercedes," Kurt says, "Your voice is stunning, but I don't believe in God."

"Wait, what?" Tina furrows her eyebrows.

"You've all stated your beliefs," Kurt tells her, "I'm stating mine. I think God is kind of like Santa Claus for adults. Otherwise, he's kind of a jerk, isn't he? He makes me gay and has his followers going around and telling me it's something I chose."

"No," Kamila shakes her head, "He gave us free will for a reason. God isn't telling those people to be assholes, they just are."

"Exactly," Says Mercedes, "And how could you know, Kurt? You can't prove there isn't a God."

Kurt sighs, "You can't prove that there isn't a magic teapot floating around on the dark side of the moon with a dwarf inside of it that reads romance novels and shoots lightning out of its boobs, but it seems pretty unlikely, doesn't it?"

Brittany furrows her eyebrows, "Is God an evil dwarf?"

•••

Thanks to Sue Sylvester, the Glee Club is no longer allowed to sing about God. Not in school, at least.

Kamila picks up the guitar that sits in the corner of her room, taking it into her hands.

"That was beautiful, Kamila," Her mother says, standing by her door.

Kamila turns to face her, "Thanks. I'm just... it's been a weird week."

"Because of your friend, Kurt?"

Kamila nods, "Yeah. His dad had a heart attack, and it's awful, and we sang spiritual songs but Kurt kind of doesn't like God."

"Oh, well, Kamila, it's not your responsibility to make sure people like God," Her mother chuckles softly.

"But I feel like it is," Kamila says, "I mean, it's God, how couldn't you like him?"

"Some people aren't going to believe the same things as you, love," Her mother assures, "And that's okay. Believe me, I agree, God is wonderful. But if Kurt doesn't believe, he has his reasons, just as you have your reasons to believe."

Kamila sighs, leaning her head on her mother's shoulder, "Thanks, mama."

"Don't mention it."
