"You can't do this!!"
"I am doing it right now, go on." While the guards hold the men down, with their heads up and necks bare, the nurses with face masks and gloves take the injection. They look up to me to give the order and I nod. They give them the shot then the guards release the men one after the other.
The nurses step back and bow to me and I do the same. "Thanks a lot for your work and cooperation, girls, you can leave now." One after the other, with guards escorting them, they leave the room.
Melancholy sets in, the realization of what just happened grip their throat so hard that their face turns so white, one should be worried. But I'm not done, oh I'm not.
Currently, I'm standing behind Federico's chair. I hold the top firmly and the man sitting on it jerks. I smirk.
"You see men, the reason I did not kill you is because I don't have backups and you all have been in the system long enough but fret not, give me three months and death will come to you. And if you thought I'd only come for you alone…. You're mistaken." My accent is thick in speech and I love it. I love the way Rico shivers when I blow air into his ear.
" You all know what happens to traitors, right?"
It takes a few seconds for them to understand and when they do, their eyes widen while some jump from their seat but with a sharp glare from me they sink back into their chairs.
"You don't want to be under me because I'm a female, I will make weak decisions… Right? The Explosion was a lesson for me and since then I've been making strong decisions and just like today, the same shot given to you has been given to your wives, children, mistress, mothers, and fathers." I drop the shocker, the look on their faces builds laughter in me till I can no longer hold it in.
My laugh howls across the walls of the room. It hits me so hard that tears pick my eyes and I slap my right knee more than once. Then I stop and collect myself. My face becomes blank immediately, no trace of humor can be found because inside… I'm dead.
"You're so lucky. At least now you'll live with caution… Or not. The button will always be with me. You all are lucky but the people at my hotel were not, the people at my clubs were not! None of them knew they were going to die. Yes, I've taken lives but you see the deaths of those people continue to haunt me. Yet, I wonder how you all can still sleep and eat and play polo."
My eyes meet with Uncle's brown ones and all I see is dread and disappointment? But at this point, I really don't care.
"This is your last warning. If I find out that you betray me in any way, I will not notify you or warn you. Your life ends at that very moment."
No one says a thing as I strut back to my seat and settle down. Suddenly, Marcus begins to thrash in his seat, struggling to break out of the cuffs his hands and legs are in.
He continues to make a ruckus, disturbing the calming peace in the air.
The other men are too deep in their shit to care, no one even looks his way but when a loud bang penetrates the air… They all do. They look up and watch as my bullet leaves my gun and goes right into Marcus's head. Right between his eyes.
Marcus stills, unmoving. Eyes wide open with mouth wide open. It gets silent as death fills the air and sinks into the heart of every single man in this room. I get up from my seat and adjust the wristwatch on my wrist. It's way past my bedtime.
"Gentlemen, you're dismissed. I hope this meeting makes an impact on our lives." I say with a sweet smile but no one makes a move to stand up or leave. I nod at the guards and they do their job, escorting these bunch of fools out of my building.
"Tonight was fun, let's do it again." I wave with glee at their sourful backs. Seconds later, the meeting room is cleared and all that is left is Uncle, Rolan, Tiana, and me.
"Davi—"
"It's past my bedtime, Uncle. You also need to rest. We'll speak tomorrow morning." I move away from my chair with the intention to return to Butcher's room.
"Fiore,"(flower) Uncle calls, his voice is rough and sad with deep regret. I pause on my way to leave and I turn back.
"No uncle, it's Veleno, not Fiore." (Poison)
"Isn't this……too far?" He asks nervously.
I let out a short laugh. No uncle, I haven't even started."
With that, I turn and leave the room. On my way to the room where Marcus is kept, I spot Uncle's family, all in their nighties sipping tea and gossiping but when I look closely, I see their shaky hands and I smile.
The lights are on in Butcher's room and worry immediately sets in me. My heart sinks and my breath quickens. Hurriedly, I take quick steps and push his door open. Right there, on the bed is Butcher reading a fairytale tale. The princess and the frog.
He looks up from the book and smiles at me. It burns my heart but I smile back. "Why are you still up?" I drop my bag on the desk before going to sit on the stool beside his bed.
"Watched the meeting you had with your capos and I must say, I'm proud of you. Those men need to be taught a lesson." He grins at me. I grin back.
"How do you feel?" My voice is light and soft, warm and gentle unlike when I speak to other people.
"I feel great, Davi."
He looks at my deadpan face and immediately averts his eyes.
"Do you —"
"It's great that you're here. Do you mind if I read this book to you? I don't know what's come over me these days all I see is—"
"I would love to hear you read me to sleep, Timothy."
