"So what are you in for?" Asks the woman sitting down next to me. Her long bleached blonde hair is in a ponytail. I don't know why, but she makes me think of the sea.
"What am I in for?" This newly discovered feelings when I meet people is weird to me. The sea? Geez, this is weird. I must admit she feels... refreshing to meet.
"Come on. Don't tell me you don't know this is the correctional services for those with magic."
I don't know what to say. She looks serious. Does Elijah think this is what I need?
"I know why each an every one is here except for you." There are about thirteen of us.
"This is an actual jail?"
"Of course." She thinks before saying, "Who send you here? What exactly did you do?"
I wanted to attack the king. But he deserved it, and more. "I wanted to attack someone. I got very, very angry." I remember how it felt. It felt great actually. I felt powerful, powerful enough to protect myself. Too bad he's got the speed and didn't mind knocking me out.
" You must have some freakish power then, because no one gets send here for wanting to attack someone. Who send you?"
I don't want to tell her that Elijah send me.
"It's usually our own family that betrays us." She sighs dramatically. "I'll look after you while you're here, you don't need to worry."
"I don't need someone to look after me." I say disagreeing with her.
"If you say so." She writes down her number, "I'm Penelope. Call me if you need my help." She puts the paper on my notebook. "Someone like you needs protection."
"You know why everyone else is here?" I ask.
She nods. "The people in this room have done some crazy things." She points at someone, a young man with black curls. "Ron used his magic to make someone give him all their assets. He lived the dream life for over a year." Another young man with short cut brown hair, "Lesley ran a cell that robbed people." A young woman, "Ina ran a prostitution ring from her mother's mansion while she was out of town for work. Ina is only seventeen." She points somewhere else, "Greg and Kelsey were on the run for two years. He has the ability to teleport to any place in the world. Kelsey can morph into anyone."
"All of them came here voluntarily?"
"We have no choice. Once caught, our whole family or loved ones gets on a list. They will get our punishment if we run or get out of hand here." She adds, "How can you not know?"
"What about you? Why are you here?"
"I can morph into a mermaid. Mother arranged a marraige for me. I didn't want to get married so I spend a few months in the sea. I was caught and brought here."
"Why must your mother choose when and who you marry?"
"It's mainly the thing in my family. Because we are what we are we usually marry those that are the same because we need to be in water for at least an hour a day. Mother caught me and brought me here about four months ago."
Sounds wrong to me. But then again, it makes sense that she feels like she's in jail.
A man looking to be in his late forties walks in, "We have a new student. Daniella Ellis, please introduce yourself."
What do I say? I slowly get up, taking my time not knowing what to say.
Penelope whispers, "Say something."
"Daniella Ellis. I'm new in this magic-thing." I sit back down.
I hear a few whispers, but can't make out what is being said.
The man up front speaks, "Thank you Daniella." Looking around the room he says, "Daniella recently discovered she has magic and came here to learn how to control it."
Kelsey speaks, "Lincholn Academy is here to torture, not to help someone control their magic, Mr. Green. We learn that in normal school." She glares at me.
Mr. Green says. "Daniella has a strong type of magic that needs to be controlled before she burns down the whole of Darres."
"That type of magic has been lost a long time ago." It's Kelsey again, "We all were taught that in primary school."
Mr. Green nods, "You are right. It has been lost." He says to me. "We will test your ability here." He then switches on a slideshow and starts to talk about witches that doesn't even live anymore.
I see Kelsey looking my way, and I try to not feel intimidated by her.
"You're officially on Kelsey's radar which is bad." Penelope whispers beside me. "Just try to ignore her as much as you are able."
What is her problem anyway?
"We are not allowed to use magic without supervision. But we still try our luck. Our abilities aren't limited to what we can do or morph in to. Magic is a crazy thing, it gives us power."
"What is the torture she mentioned?"
"They connect you on to a machine that sends huge amounts of electricity through your brain and body to test you."
I'm speechless. What? That's what they're going to do to me?
"...That's all for today." Mr. Green looks around the room. "I advice that you go visit the library and see if there's anything you'd like to read."
Penelope whispers, "Part of the pshycology around here. I heard they write down everything we do and discuss it to see how they can help us become better people."
"Why don't they just take our magic ?"
"They're not allowed to as an order from Lincoln himself. You have heard of Lincoln Flint, haven't you?"
I pack up just like everyone. "I've met him."
"You met Lincoln?" She asks surprised.
"You haven't?" I pick up my shoulder bag.
"No. Meeting Lincoln Flint is not common. Who are you really?" She picks up her shoulder bag too. "You have plans this afternoon?"
"I don't."
"Want to go to the beach?"
"Oh. You're going to do your mermaid-thing then?"
"Yeah."
"How are you getting there? Is there even a beach around?"
"I have a car here, privilege for being a mermaid."
"Are we even allowed to leave?"
"I'm the only one who can. It's boring going by myself. I'll ask if you can go with me."
