CHAPTER ONE

A week had passed since Maybell met the Palulukan and she had been sneaking off into the forest to meet with him. The Palulukan was her friend and he liked her. He had become very attached to her. It was a nice friendship. Maybell went into the forest everyday to hang out with Taytin. They would swim and play together. Taytin was protective of her and he always made sure that she was safe. He would stay close by and watch over her, keeping an eye on her. It was a nice feeling and she appreciated it.

Maybell and Jake had become closer. She was glad she and her uncle were close. He was the only family she had. Sure, she had Neytiri, Spider, and their kids, but Jake was the only biological family she had left.

"Maybell, where are you going?"

Maybell stopped and turned to look at her uncle. He had caught her sneaking out. She was trying to go and see her new friend. She had been going to the forest a lot. She would go after dinner. It was the best time since there was no one around and she could see her friend.

"Just going for a walk." She replied, smiling a little.

"Really? Where are you going? You've been going to the forest a lot lately." Jake commented, raising an eyebrow.

"Just exploring. You know how much I love exploring." Maybell shrugs. "Is it wrong for me to explore?" She questioned, sounding defensive as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"No. But you've been spending a lot of time there. What's going on?" He inquired.

Maybell sighs, not wanting to tell him. But he knew her better than anyone. "I'm going to see Taytin. The Palulukan that I've befriended."

Jake shakes his head, chuckling a little. "May, you're the only one I know who would willingly go hang out with a Palulukan. I know I can't stop you, but just be careful. Please. And don't forget to be back by eclipse." He reminded her, his voice stern, but gentle.

Maybell nods, smiling a little. She was happy Jake wouldn't stop her from going. She had been worried that he would and she was grateful that he didn't. "I will, promise." She went over to hug him, her smile widening. "Thank you, Uncle Jake."

"No problem, kiddo. Just be careful." He hugged her back, sighing softly.

"Always am." Maybell grinned, letting go and going back to her room to grab her stuff. Then she headed out, ready to see her new friend. She headed into the forest and went to their spot. She got there and saw Taytin laying down in front of one of the big trees around the clearing. He was resting, his tail swishing back and forth lazily. Maybell slowly approached, not wanting to disturb him. She didn't want him to wake up and attack her. She didn't think he would, but you never know. She had been friends with him for a week, but she was still a little wary.

Maybell crept over and carefully sat down, a few feet away. She was being cautious and careful, not wanting to wake him. But Taytin was a light sleeper and he had heard her. He raised his head and opened his eyes, looking over at her. His ears perked up and his tail swished back and forth happily. Maybell grinned, knowing he was glad to see her.

"Hey, buddy. Did I wake you up?" She asks softly. "Sorry if I did. I didn't mean to."

Taytin got up and stretched, shaking his head. Then he moved closer and sat down, lowering his head and bumping his nose against her shoulder. Maybell chuckles and pets him, smiling as he laid down and laid his head on her lap. She continued to stroke his fur, her fingers brushing through the thick strands. Taytin's eyes closed and he rumbled softly, relaxing. Maybell smiled fondly and looked around the forest, taking in the peacefulness of it. The trees were tall and lush, their leaves bright green. The air was cool and the breeze was gentle. It was nice and relaxing. She had always loved the forest and she could sit here for hours.
