Prologue
"Mommy, please don't leave me" I sobbed as I sat holding her hand as she lay there in her hospital bed, her eyes gleaming, filled with a mixture of love and tears.

I awoke in a cold sweat as I heard the front door slam shut, I quickly scurried from my bedroom into my attached bathroom hoping that it would deter him for a while.
As I heard his footsteps come up the stairs and approach my room I knew what was to come.
"Get out here you filthy whore" he growled from outside my bedroom door.
I kept quiet, silently praying that he was too drunk and would just give up and pass out on the couch.
"You worthless piece of shit" he raged "I said get out here...now!"
I knew better than to keep hiding, I quickly unlocked my bathroom door and stepped into my bedroom. As I approached my bedroom door to unlock the monster I call my father lost his patience and slammed open the door.
I had never seen this look in his eyes before, he looked like a wild man. Most times it was just a mixture of sadness and anger, but this was a look of pure hatred and rage. This can't be how my life ends, here in this ratty old house at the hands of my father.
He glided towards me and landed a punch across my cheek, I winced in pain, but knew better than to cry.
"Look at me" he hissed.
I looked up and once again saw that crazy look in his eyes, but was quickly distracted by the gleaming pocket knife he was holding in his hand.
I collapsed to my knees and everything went dark.
