"Zach," I started, "I haven't been completely honest with you..."
He sat there and listed to every words I spoke. I told him how everything was fine and we were one big happy family until my mother passed away. How my dad had slowly become an alcoholic and started abusing me. About how the abuse got worse and worse until the day I wound up in the hospital and was brought here.
"Zach..." I sobbed, "he beat me, h-he"
"Shh, it's going to be okay" he murmured
"H-he took my innocence" that phrase absolutely shattered me.
A fire lit in Zach's eyes, as if he wanted to kill someone, but he remained calm and held me.
"It's getting late, I'll tuck you in" he stated as he helped me up and walked me towards the bedroom.
I laid down in my bed and he tucked the blankets around me, as he turned on his heel to leave I grabbed his hand.
"Please don't leave me" I whimpered.
He grabbed a pillow off my bed and laid down on the floor next to my bed and we both tried to get some rest.
- Nightmare -
There was a knock at my door, it must have been Zach, he was supposed to come over today.
I opened the door and my heart stopped, standing there before me was my father with the most cynical grin.
"I told you I'd find you sweetie" he cooed as he pulled out a knife and lunged at me.
I screamed as the knife sunk into me.
- End of Nightmare -
"Brynn" Zach's voice rang through "Brynn, wake up"
I woke up to Zach hovering over me shaking me gently. I looked over at the clock and it read 2:38 a.m.
"Can you hold me?" I whispered.
"Of course"
I scooted over in bed and he crawled in next to me wrapping me in his warm embrace, I drifted off into a peaceful sleep for the first time in a long time.
I woke up to the smell of pancakes, I looked around and realized the time. Shit, I need to be at work. I frantically got out of bed and threw on some clothes and ran out to the kitchen.
"Hey, where do you think you're going?" He asked politely
"I'm late for work!"
"I already texted Grace and told her you won't be in today"
I breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed down on one of the kitchen chairs.
Zach had cooked up chocolate chip pancakes and breakfast sausages for us, we ate together in silence, however there was so much tension hanging in the air.
"So..." Zach trailed off "do we know for certain that he was released"
I inhaled sharply and shook my head no.
"How are we going to figure out if he was telling the truth?" He asked.
I shook my head, not knowing. We sat in silence for a while until I realized I still had Officer Rogers phone number. I quickly stood up and headed to my bedroom to find it, Zach followed closely behind with a puzzled look on his face. I tore apart my entire room until I found the card and help it up proudly showing Zach.
"I'm not quite sure what you're showing me" he said with a confused look on his face.
"This is the phone number of the officer who brought me hear, he should know"
I picked up my phone and dialled the number, it rang 3 times before I heard a familiar voice on the other end.
"Hello, this is Officer Rogers"
"Hello officer Rogers, this is Brynn"
"Brynn? Is that really you? How are you doing?"
"I'm doing okay"
"What can I do for you?"
"I received a text from my dad, saying he was released and was going to come and find me. I need to know if this is true?"
"Hmm, let me take a look into this for you, just give me a moment"
Waiting on hold felt like eternity, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if it really was true.
"Brynn" his voice rang through the phone "are you still there?"
"Yes, I am"
"He has not been released, his hearing is scheduled in 2 week to see what his sentence is"
I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Just know that I am doing everything I can to keep him in prison where he belongs, but you do know he has friends on the force. I will be in touch with you if anything changes"
"Thank you"
"You're welcome Brynn, you take care."
And with that I hung up the phone.
I turned to Zach, so excited and relieved by the words I just heard from officer Rogers.
"He hasn't been released" I beamed.
Zach picked me up in a hug and spun me around, without evening thinking we both leaned in and he planted his lips onto mine. He set me back on my feet and pressed his forehead to mine.
"I'm sorry" he whispered "I've been dying to do that for months now."
I gave him a puzzled look and he just chuckled in response.
"Brynn, you are one of the most beautiful woman I've ever met, and I'm not even talking about just your outward appearance. You have the kindest soul on the meanest earth and it's been an absolute joy getting to know you"
I blushed and looked away from him, distracting myself by playing with my hands.
"Zach..." I started "you could do so much better than me, I come with a lot of baggage, and I have been broken beyond repair."
"How about I take you on a real date and we go from there, okay?" He asked with the kindest smile.
I nodded and he pulled me into a warm embrace. We chatted away for the remainder of the day before cuddling up on the couch to watch a movie to end off our evening.
