*Beep* *Beep* *Beep*

What is that annoying beeping? I thought to myself.

Why does everything hurt?

What happened?

I tried to open by eyes but they wouldn't budge, what is happening? Why won't this annoying beeping noise stop and where am I?

My head was pounding as I tried to remember what had happened when all of a sudden all these memories came rushing back to me.

The punch, the pocket knife, it all came flooding back.

- Flashback -

"Brynn, you worthless child..." he mumbled "I am going to inflict on you all the pain you have given to me"

I attempted to cower away from my father but he grabbed me by my hair and yanked me towards him.

"Where do you think you're going?" He spat.

He kicked me as hard as he could in the shin and I collapsed in pain, he then drove his knee into my eye socket and chuckled to himself.

He continued to beat on me until I had fully given in and stopped fighting the inevitable.

"Oh baby girl" he chimed "the fun is just starting"

When he started to drag me over towards my bed I clued in to what his next thoughts were and that's when the panic settled in. I started to scream and kick at him but he just dug his nails into my ankle deeper as he continued to drag.

He threw my lifeless body onto my bed and bound me to it.

"Please..." I choked out between sobs "please don't do this"

I continued to beg this sentence over and over as he took my innocence from me.

I laid there, a shell of human, thinking that nothing could be worse than this.

I was so wrong, it was then that he decided to pull his pocketknife back out.

- End of Flashback -

I forced my eyes open as I could not stand to relive that memory any more.

My eyes burned from the bright blinding white lights that surrounded me, for a moment I thought I was in heaven. That was until my eyes finally adjusted and I realized that I was in the hospital.

Suddenly there were doctors and nurses flooding my room, the buzz of them all talking was making my head pound even more than it already was. I grabbed my head in my hands and shouted at everyone to be quiet.

The room went quiet, aside from the beeping and humming of various medical equipment. I looked up from my hands and looked around. Everyone was staring at me, so I stared back at them.

Finally, one of the nurses stepped forward and spoke.

"H-how are you feeling?" she choked.

"I've been better" I mumbled in reply.

The rest of the day was filled with various tests, wound care, and a visit from a therapist.

Just as I was about to drift off to sleep an officer in uniform stepped in my room.

I immediately started to panic, my father had friends on the force who have been covering up his abuse for years.

"Woah..." he said as his put up an outstretch hand "It's okay, he can't get you here"

I looked at him skeptically.

He gave me a knowing look, and all he said in reply was "I'm not friends with him".

And with that I collapsed into a puddle of tears.

Officer Rogers sat by my side and held my hand as I recounted the evening to him. By the end of reliving that nightmare I was a blubbering mess.

As I finished he stood up, I began to panic that he was just going to leave without a word and that my father would hear of this and finish the job.

He looked back down at me with a pained look in his eyes.

"Please..." I begged as I began to hyperventilate, "please you have to believe me"

"Brynn" He looked at me with his kind eyes, "I believe you, your father is already being held without bail until his hearing, you're safe."

Safe.

I'm safe. Those words seemed foreign to me, I can't remember the last time that I've felt safe.

"So what now?" I asked

"Well, your father will remain in jail until his hearing to decide what his sentence will be" he started.

"What happens if he's released? I can't stay with that monster" I interrupted.

"I have a hard time believing that he will be released considering all of the evidence we have against him. However, to keep you safe, once you are released you will be escorted to your home to gather your belongings and you will be relocated away from your father."

I looked at him and nodded.

"Goodnight Brynn, I have to get back to the station."

And with that he walked away.

I tossed and turned for most of the night, I couldn't stop relieving that nightmare.

7:00 a.m. rolled around and the nurses began their rounds again. My nurse had informed me that I would be released today and that Officer Rogers would be back in the afternoon to collect me.

I sat there for most of the day twiddling my thumbs and trying to keep my mind off of what I was going to do and where I was going to be placed. After losing my mother I didn't really have any connections with anyone in this town, so a fresh start would be good for me. My mind kept wandering to what would happen if he found me?

My train of thoughts were interrupted when Officer Rogers knocked on my door and quietly asked me if I was ready to go.

I nodded gently and walked towards the door, not knowing what was in store for me.
