Shang tossed back and forth between his two minds. What she had done was wrong, dishonourable. Women didn't belong in the army, but did they? Without a doubt, Mulan was his best soldier. She was on their side and worked hard to fight for her country. Even though what she was doing was against the law, anybody fighting to save their China didn't deserve to die. Shang wondered about himself. If he were in her position, would he have done the same for his father? He hoped so.
Then, he thought about the state of his army. He worried that without her, they wouldn't stand a chance against the Huns but, he also worried about her. Either of them could slip up at any moment. Now that Shang knew she was a woman, Mulan's soft features and high pitched voice felt glaringly obvious. Calling her 'Ping' was becoming more unnatural every time he tried. He had already decided that he didn't want her to die. Shang had no doubt that some of the soldiers in his army would show her kindness but he didn't know about all of them. It'd be dangerous. They could blackmail her or take the law into their own hands. It was a tricky decision. He'd need to think carefully even if it meant staying up all night.

FanfictionA slight twist on the story. Shang discovers Mulan's secret sooner and under different circumstances. It'll mainly be based on the original Disney film, but I'll add some of the live action plot points in too.
