Normal P.O.V

Somewhere deep in the woods, Zeref lay on the green grass taking a nap as he recalls some memories of when he was a small child.

--flashback---

-Midian Academy of Magic

"It's, uh...It's almost unthinkable." One of the teachers there mutters reading the notes that young Zeref has written. "Yes. These ideas... You wrote this treatise yourself?" One of them asked the young ravenette.

"Yes." Young Zeref stood before them all proudly of his work.

"I see."

"The work is quite impressive, but I cannot condone the content. " The teacher refused to help him out.

"It's not appropriate for a child to discuss matters such as these." The other teacher said being eerie of the boy.

"Your age notwithstanding, magic pertaining to life and death is dangerous and forbidden territory. You must not delve further into it."

A frown makes its way toward the young child's face.

"It would surely be looked upon as an act of hubris."  A teacher hums agreeing his work is not to be meddled with. "Such thinking would risk drawing the ire of the god of life and death, Ankhsealm.  This, we will not allow you to continue pursuing this magic."

"Well, Zeref, is that clear?"

"Yes, sir," Zeref says frowning in disappointment.

------

Zeref walks away clenching on to his notes. "All I want is to understand why people live. And why it is we die. There has to be a reason." Zeref says to himself staring up at the sky.

"Mommy says it's because even though there is life, death eventually has to come. So there's a balance between the two."

The young wizard turns around to see his half-demon friend that had long black hair. Dog for ears and beautiful golden eyes.

--End of flashback--

Zeref opens his onyx eyes.  "A dream?" He mutters tiredly.

Zeref sits up as he does a stretch. "Must've been a dream. " He glanced down at the clear blue river. "Can't remember the last time I had one."

The memory of meeting Natsu and Shana during the battle of Tartarus plays in his mind.

A smile appears on his face. "Natsu. It's been ages since my younger brother was with us, wouldn't you agree, Nietono no Shana. At the time he was taken, his life was just beginning. I could never understand why you took his life away, Nietono no Shana." He continues to mutter staring at his reflection in the water that reminds him of the half-demon.

"And so... that became my life's mission. "
