Cody turned out to be a grade above me, but that was fine, I had still made my first friend  at Pinewood highschool, and that was enough to turn my nerves about the day around.  Most of my classes were just teachers going over their policies and doing ice breakers to introduce ourselves, either no one cares about the switch or not a lot of people knew, because only one other kid then Cody realized who I was.  It was right before lunch, in my science class, we had just been told to break out in partners and get to know the person we'd be doing assignments with for the rest of the semester.  The girl had come in late so she was stuck with me, and the second I told her my name, I could see a spark of recognition in her eyes.

"Wait, you're the girl that the Jacobs just got custody of?" It was an odd way to say that, but I nodded.

"Yeah," I say awkwardly, pulling out the partner form we were supposed to be filling out. "So how do you spell your name?"

She puts her hand over the paper, "so what, did they just move you in, expecting to completely forget about Evelyn?"

This threw me off, and it felt just a little bit like karma, for all the times I accused the Jacobs of the same thing. "Um..." I didn't know what to say.

"Just because your they're biological daughter, that doesn't mean anything." She says quietly and it sounds bad if she intended it to be mean.

I raise my hand, "can I get a new partner?"  The girls eyes narrow and everyone one the room stares at us.

"Is there a specific reason you can't work with Cassidy?" Mr. Bopheenie asks and I look at the girl who, if looks could kill, would have murdered me five seconds ago. Looking back down I shake my head. "Well everyone already has partners so unless someone else volunteers to trade, you're stuck with each other.

I hear Cassidy scoff under her breath, "wow, that was a bitch move." She may have had more to say, but fortunately for me, the bell rang at that exact moment and I didn't hesitate to grab my bag and leave.  I was not used to being on the other side of that treatment, and it completely threw me off.

It only took me ten minutes, of our thirty minute lunch, to find the cafeteria. After what had happened in biology I wasn't really hungry. however, I didn't  feel like just standing randomly in the halls either. I was standing by the doors, trying  to figure out where to sit, when I heard my name from a few tables away. "John-jacobs!" I could see Cody waving and I walked towards him. He was sitting with a girl and another guy.

"Hey," I said as I sat down.

"Guys this is my new best friend I was telling you about, you can call her EJ, but only I get to call her John-Jacobs, it's our thing." He explains to them.

"It is in fact not our thing," I dead pan and the girl laughs.

"Hi, I'm Arielle, and sorry about Cody, he's kind of like a stray cat that you feed once and then never goes away." She explains and Cody frowns.

"That is a very rude thing to say about your boyfriend." Cody tells her, a slight smirk threatening to break up his fake pout.

"Cody, you are a boy, and you are my friend, you are not my boyfriend." She tells him, and I have the feeling this isn't the first time.

Cody rolls his eyes, "that's basically what I said." They then start to bicker for a bit.

The other boy looks at me, "I'm will, and just ignore them, since they're neighbor's and have known each other since they were two, they fight like this all the time.
