in the 14th century, Drake Wright had lived such a dull, yet content life in a small village on a small farm that his parents proudly owned. they were poor, but happy. it was just him, his parents and his younger brother. one day, when he grew up, he was going to own the farm. he patiently waited for that moment, tilling the lands day in and day out.

then disaster struck in 1346. the Black Death, a devastating bubonic plague, had wiped out more than 25 million people in Europe - part of that 25 million was Drake's mother, father, and his brother. it was just him left. he'd been infected and was only holding on life by a thread. he laid in his home that had once been so full of life and happiness, but now there was only death and sadness that invaded and made themselves comfortable.

"I'll join you soon, Mother, Father... Alvin..."

Drake could feel his life slipping away from him as his eyelids grew heavy. until, he felt a presence in the home with him.

"h-hello?" he called out weakly.

the intruder said nothing. all Drake saw was a shadowy figure wearing a mask he'd seen the doctors wear. he heard that the "beak" of the mask was filled with flowers and good scents to protect themselves from contracting the plague and to mask the smell of death that lingered everywhere now. Drake felt himself being lifted up, surprised the person could hold him; he wasn't small.

waking up in an unfamiliar place, Drake was simply surprised he hadn't died yet. the plague was eating him from the inside out, and he wanted so badly for it to just end. the place he woke up in looked like a clinic. it was odd because from what he knew, the plague was incurable. if you contracted it, you were on a one-way track to the afterlife. he tried his hardest to call out.

"please... is somebody... here...?"

the same figure with the unsettling plague mask reappeared, and Drake just stared. he had no energy to do anything anymore.

"does it hurt?" asked the figure. the voice was male, and it was quite gentle.

"... yes."

"I could make it go away," said the figure. "would you like that?"

assuming the figure was going to mercy kill him, Drake nodded with zero hesitation. Lord knows that all he wanted to do was be with his family again.

"very well."

the figure removed his mask and underneath it was one of the most beautiful people Drake had ever seen in his life. Drake saw the piercing hazel eyes and the dark, curly hair and could've sworn this was an angel. until he finally saw the four sharp fangs that protruded from the top of his mouth. it happened fast. Drake didn't really feel anything as the fangs sunk unto his flesh; the pain from the plague was much greater. there was a short period of time where he blacked out shortly after the bite; Drake knew that he'd died and had been brought back to life. he was brought back to a life where the pain and sickness he'd felt was no longer there. in fact, he felt the healthiest he'd ever been in his entire life.

he stood up to test out this newfound "life." he was astonished.

"now, you'll never know pain," said the dark-haired man.

"who are you?" asked Drake.

"quite a complicated question, Newborn."

"well... I thank you for helping me," said Drake, still not fully aware of what had just happened to him. even though he didn't meet his family, all he knew was that he finally didn't feel anymore pain.

"so... what happened to the vampire?" asked Cedric, fully invested in Drake's intriguing yet painful tale.

"I don't know. I turned around and he was gone. I think about him sometimes, wondering where he's gone off to."

"I'm... sorry about your family, Drake."

Drake shook his head and held up his hand. "don't apologize; you didn't kill them."

"I know but... you went through that and you've lived almost 500 years..." Cedric was searching for something else to say but Drake shushed him, touching his cheek.

"it was a lot of time to heal. I'm alright, Cedric. Really."

Cedric somehow didn't believe him, but Drake left no room for more conversation, so Cedric dropped it.

"now, if you don't mind me asking, how did you come to meet Ran?"

Cedric had suddenly become embarrassed. "I... drank and we ended up together for the night. it was no surprise I couldn't remember who she was when I wanted to find her."

"quite an origin story."
