Chapter 9-Figuratively, of Course

I fitfully awoke to the horrible sound of my alarm clock, blaring it's head away. I groaned. "Shut up," I snapped to nothing in particular, possibly the alarm clock. It kept on beeping. "Shut up!" I said, louder. No use. "SHUT UP!" I roared. I walked over and smacked it a couple of times, switching it off.

Alarm clocks are evil things, especially the ones that beep so annoyingly they make you want to tear your hair out piece by piece.

Ladies and gents, that would be my alarm clock.

Fortunately today, I would be on time. I grabbed a sweatshirt and shorts, and headed out after eating a bowl of cereal. The chilly October wind left me feeling refreshed, and I quickly headed down the steps onto the pavement, where Olive's car was waiting. I hastily opened the door, where Lily and Val greeted me. "Thanks for picking me up, Olive," I said.

"No problemo, mi amigo." I chuckled.

"Your Spanish is impeccable, as usual." She smirked.

"You don't have to remind me."

It was almost Halloween, and our school had taken the time and energy (and money) to start decorating the corridors with little Halloween themed things. I loved any decorations, and it was nice to see the school all brightened up. Call me a sucker for holiday spirit.

This also meant that they had put about a million posters about the annual Halloween dance. Personally, I'd never been, because you needed a date to go there, and nobody had invited me to join them. Therefore, it was a mostly depressing night for me, because it reminded me that I was a nobody. But the four of us went trick or treating, since trick or treating was the best thing ever. I mean, who wouldn't want free candy?

Although I particularly had no interest in this Halloween dance, it seemed like the rest of the school did.

By lunch time, the school was bustling with news about who was going to ask who out. By the time I joined Olive, Val and Lily at our usual spot, I was rather annoyed. Olive shot me a sympathetic glance. "None of you are going, I presume?" The three of them shook their heads. I nodded. "I don't think I'm going, either." Olive cleared her throat.

"Listen, guys, I was going to go with you guys to trick or treat and all, but there's just so much homework." She rubbed her forehead with her hands. "I'm sorry." That sucked, but I got it. High school gave out so much homework, it probably applied for the rest of us too.

"I get you, I said. We probably all have one big project due by the end of the month." Val nodded her head.

"We should still wear our costumes!" Lily said.

"When?" I asked, confused. She smiled.

"You know, on Halloween night. IN THE SPIRIT OF HALLOWEEN!" She yelled. A little too loudly. I face palmed, but it definitely lightened the mood. Before long, it was time to head to our first afternoon class. I had study hall, so I could luckily finish some homework. I wave goodbye to my friends, and quickly ran to the library, hoping that it wouldn't be too crowded.

There were some people, but luckily, my wish had been successfully granted. I sat in the corner, and took out my chemistry textbook. That thing sure was heavy. I was reading about the significance of cations when I heard two girls giggling rather loudly. I looked up, and cleared my throat. 'Please be quiet,' I thought to myself. They quieted after an while, thank god, and I continued reading. Then the laughing started all over again, and I looked at them. They glared back. "What do you want?" one of them asked, giving me that who-do-you-think-you-are looks. I shrank back in my seat, and quickly started reading again.

I heard one of them say something to the other in hurried whispers. "Hi, Cade," one of them said. I straightened, and looked up. Speak of the devil. He said hello, and then walked over to my table. I offered him a small wave and a timid smile.

"Hi," I whispered.

"Hey." I crinkled an eyebrow. He was usually an arrogant jerk, but today he seemed rather nervous. About what, though?

"What's up?"

"Nothing much." He ran his hands through his hair. "Any plans for Halloween?"

Huh?

"Probably gonna go home, eat ice cream, and watch UEFA replays." Before I knew it, I was explaining to Cade my inner soccer spirit for some reason. "Man U's my personal favorite team, but I really love Messi and Ronaldo, too. I also like FC Barcelona, I mean how can you not? They're so go-" I stopped when I saw Cade laughing. I narrowed my eyes. "What?" I asked him. "Did I say something funny?" He grinned.

"You're just so random." I huffed, crossing my arms. He cleared his throat.

"What I was going to ask you, is..." He closed his eyes and took a breath. I narrowed my eyes again.

"If this is about me completing your homework, forget it-" Cade cut me off.

"Willyougotothedancewithme?" I scrunched my nose up in pure, and utter confusion.

"The hell?" I shook my head. "I can't comprehend what you just said, you spoke way too quickly." He looked me in the eye.

"Will. You. Go. To. The. Dance. With. Me." My mouth fell to the library floor. Figuratively, of course.

"Yes," I blurted out. "Wait, what?" He grinned, taking my head in his hands, and placed a kiss on my forehead. My eyes bulged out of their sockets. Figuratively, of course. Cade King had just kissed my forehead.

"I'll pick you up at yours," he said. "I gotta run, already missed half of my class." I nodded, still in a daze. He walked away, sending me one last smile. I grinned, and waved.

"What, Cade!" I called after him. He looked around.

"Yeah?" I cleared my throat.

"I, um, I have a Tigger costume, so..." He burst out laughing. I couldn't help but laugh, too. "It may not match whatever you're trying to be, cause I doubt you're doing a Winnie the Pooh themed costume." He grinned.

"It's okay, we don't have to be matching."

"Okay," I said. "See you," he grinned.

"Bye, Eve." I ran quickly to my table, and buried my face into my chemistry textbook, hiding the smile that stretched across my face.

Figuratively, of course.
