Preston combed his pale fingers through his curly brown hair, pacing his breath. "Ready, honey?" His mother asked. He smiled and stepped out of the car. "Love you," his mom called. "You too," he said, hugging her. "I'll see you around Christmas, Pres," she said. "Bye mom," he replied trying not to cry like the weakling he felt he was. Sure he didn't come from her womb, but Chastity Williams was more of a mom than that witch ever would be. Sure Dave left Chastity once she took in Preston, but he loved her. Preston slung his tote over his shoulder, and put his fists in his pockets entirely by default. Staring at the ground, he didn't watch his way, and bumped into someone. "Oh I'm so sorry. You okay?" He asked, finally looking at the person he hit. She was beautiful. Her eyes were kind, her dark lips complimented her fair skin, and her dirty blonde hair breezed in the wind. "I'm fantastic actually," she said giggling. "What's your name?" Preston asked. "I'm Mia Manson. A freshman," she said. "I'm a freshman too. I'm Preston," he said. "Can I have your number? Just in case you hit me again," Mia said. They exchanged numbers and went on to compare their schedules for the semester. "You have philosophy with that weirdo too?!" Mia said. "Weirdo?" Preston replied, confused. "There's some rumor that he's a psycho or something. Nothing really," Mia said laughing. "Just what I need, a psychotic maniac teaching me," he said with a chuckle. "Hey, I'm kidding. My sorority sisters are throwing a party tonight. Technically it's only for sorority girls and frats but I can sneak you in?" Mia suggested. "I'd like that. I'll pay you back somehow," Preston replied. "You can do my homework in Dr. McDetry's class. I'm regretting signing up for Advanced Literature Analyzation," she laughed. "Hey. At least I'll be there," he replied, soft and warm. "You're to sweet," she said. "I gotta go, see you in class," Preston replied, awkwardly scrambling for his books.

Preston looked at the clock in his Calculus 4 class, anxiously panting because it was two minutes past the end. "You're dismissed," his teacher said. Preston ran out as fast as he could. But he wasn't fast enough, because he walked into Dr. Seldon's class and the teachers first words were "Mr. Dellis, you're very late. Where have you been?" He asked, thick eyebrows growing closer to the ceiling. "I um- er well was at um uh calculus four and I'm it uh let out kinda uh late," he explained. "I'll let it go Mr. Dellis. Please have a seat. I think there's an open one by Miss Manson," Dr. Seldon suggested. Preston glowingly had a seat by Mia. She had her ripped jeans covering her Vans, which were propped up on the desk. "Are you allowed to do that?" Preston asked her. "Heck no. I can just yell louder than Seldon," she said popping her bubblegum in his face. How on earth could this adorable angel belong in a sorority? "Mr. Dellis, are you paying attention?" Seldon snapped, thick eyebrows raising again. "Yes, professor," Preston replied, lying.

"You all better read chapter 8 and analyze it deeply. Oh and Mr. Dellis, can you see me real quick?" Seldon yelled. Preston gulped and approached the podium. "Mr. Dellis, I know you've struggled at home," Dr. Seldon said. "Call me Preston. But how did you know?" He asked cautiously. "Preston, I know many things that most don't believe I could possibly know. But if you'd like, I'd be more than happy to talk with you anytime. I know I seem rough, but I'm here for you," Dr. Seldon offered. Preston thanked him, and walked out feeling a bit on edge, but hopeful.
