Chapter Twenty-Four
Niall’s POV
The legs of the chair squeaked against the wood floor as I pushed myself back slightly from the table. “So full.” I said, wiping my mouth and tossing the napkin atop my empty plate.
“You only had three helpings, Ni. Are you sure you liked it?” Roxy said sarcastically.
“Well, it wasn’t as good as my Granny does it, but I haven’t had Colcannon this good in a long time.” I said.
“It’ll never taste as good as your Granny’s. I can’t even compete.”
I kissed her on the cheek and stood, clearing our plates to her tiny kitchen. “Cooks don’t clean.” I said and cut her off as she went to begin loading the dishwasher.
“Mmmbaby. Dirty talk already? The sun hasn’t even gone down.” She said with a little smile. She tried twice more to help me, but each time I blocked her. Giving up, she sat down on the couch, kicked her feet up onto the coffee table and pulled her computer onto her lap, and heard the familiar tone of Skype booting up. Roxy and her parents have regular weekly chats, which I think is really sweet. They seemed like very nice people. They are a little kooky, which isn’t surprising, knowing the type of child they produced.
I caught myself daydreaming as I finished scrubbing the last pot. Tomorrow, we are finally going to my mum’s for lunch. I hope she and Roxy get on well. I could tell Roxy was at least a little nervous. My ears perked up when I realized the Collinses were talking about me. “We just finished dinner. He’s here now. Want to say hi?” she said. I wiped my hands on a towel and popped over to the living area. “Hi. How are ya? You missed a real spread tonight. Rox outdid herself as usual.” I have to admit it was a little strange talking to her parents this way, considering that we’ve never met in person. She still hasn’t filled them in on what it is that I do for a living, so we keep the encounters brief and very casual.
She finished up her call and slid her laptop back onto the coffee table. “Whatcha wanna do tonight?” She said, laying her head on my thigh.
“Josh is back in town. Wanted to know if we’d like to come over and chill, maybe play some pool.” I said, brushing her hair off her forehead. “His girlfriend will be there too, so you won’t be the third wheel.” I joked. Josh and I tend to be pretty intense when we get together, but Rox holds her own.
“We haven’t seen him in ages! What’s his girlfriend’s name again? I know we met once at Zayn’s…”
I am terrible with names. “Amanda? No.”
“Melissa?” she offered. “No. That’s not it either.”
“Shit.” I said. We both laughed.
“We’re terrible people, Niall.” She said, closing her eyes.
“How were we supposed to know she’d last?” I said.
Roxy sat up quickly. “Vanessa!” she yelled.
Roxy’s POV
The elevator doors closed and I felt Niall’s hand on my hips. He turned me around and pulled my lips onto his. I loved the elevator kissing rule. Sometimes it was sweet, sometimes it was spicy. This one was a nice balance of the two. I groaned as the elevator stopped at the fifth floor and an old lady shuffled in. Niall smiled and leaned back against the stainless steel wall.
“Devine my boy!!” Niall yelled into the door as he knocked rapidly. Josh pulled the door open, and wrapped his arms around Niall. “Nice to see you too, Josh.” I said, as I pushed past the young lovers into the apartment.
