late night calls

Harper was lying awake in her bed. She glanced at her alarm clock.

"1 am only?" She thought.

She couldn't sleep. Her brain was still trying to process about last night's turn of events. She grabbed her phone and decided to call no other than Griffin Campbell, her best friend. She didn't know if he would still be up but it was worth a try.

When he picked up, she saw his head still lying on his pillow. His hair was a mess and his eyes were barely open.

"Hey, Harper" His voice croaked.

"Sorry, is this a bad time?" She asked, noticing he was rubbing his tired eyes.

"It's fine," He laughed "Anyway what's up?

"Nothing just...alot on my mind I guess,"

"Well you're not the only one. I've been having alot on my mind too,"

They both sbared a sweet smile before he continued.

"I take it that it was about last night,"

She nodded her head. The two became quiet over the phone for a minute or two. That was when Griffin cleared his throat.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"Yeah. It's this whole Nick thing. I mean finding out we have a kid together is just a lot to take in,"

Griffin was silent on his end. He had to admit it was a really weird situation to come to terms with.

“We’re still good right?” he asked uncertainly. “I mean we’re still friends and the future is not set in stone you know so anything could happen.”

Harper nodded quickly, “Yes! Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. We’re still friends of course. Nothing awkward to see here.”

Silence resumed. Griffin had the lingering feeling he’d said something wrong; Harper didn’t feel reassured by his words. What had he meant by “the future is not set in stone”? Was it so bad for him to imagine them being together in the future?

Griffin’s thoughts weren’t much better. Why was she so bothered by Nick being their kid? Did she like someone else? Did she only think of him as just a friend?

"So how about you? What's on your mind, Griffin?" She asked, making him snap out of his thoughts.

"To be honest, all I got from last night was what happened in 2024," He said.

"Oh, you mean...our moment?" Harper said, when she realized what he was talking about.

"Yeah..."

Harper felt her face heat up as she stammered through her sentence, “That, um that was weird, yeah. Really something unexpected.”

Griffin nodded. He found himself weirdly happy about what he had seen.

But that wasn’t right. They were supposed to be best friends. Nothing more, nothing less.

…But then why did it feel like his heart was being ripped out of his chest at the sound of Harper’s uncomfortable tone?

“So uh,” he began, in an attempt to break the awkward pause in their conversation "Crazy night yesterday huh?"

"You can say that," Harper agreed, as she cuddled her brown teddy bear.

The two then went back to uncomfortable awkward silence once again. Griffin wanted to talk more about the kiss so he thought he should say something. Apparently, Harper was thinking the same thing now that he brought it up.

"We need to-"
"So-"

The pair shared a quiet laugh.

"You want to go first?" Griffin asked.

"No, it's okay. You go first,"

Griffin hesitated for a while. When he thought of everything he was going to say, he started to talk.

"So um...that kiss you know we had last night.  Look, I know that it was unexpected and since it happened I can't stop thinking about,"

"Wait, are you having doubts? You know about..." She asked.

"Um...I actually don't I just-"

Harper raised her eyebrow, not being patient because of the long suspense.

"Just what?"

"I just wish I had the courage to do it earlier," He said, smiling sweetly at her.

Harper's cheeks were now flushed in a light shade of pink. She was too flustered she didn't know what to say to that. Griffin decided to swiftly continue.

"What I'm trying to say is. Harper...I like you. Actually, I think I love you," He confessed.

Harper didn't know if she was dreaming. Did Griffin say what she think he said or was it all in her head?

"W-What did you say?" Harper asked.

"I love you, Harper"

Harper looked down, until she found the courage to look at Griffin through her phone screen again.

"Wait so that speech you said about loving someone it was about me?"

"Yeah, it was"

Harper was speechless. She didn't know what to say. If Griffin was here right in front of her, she would have kissed him. Again.

"Griffin,"

"Hm?"

"I love you too," She confessed.

She let out a little smile when she saw her best friend's face now red.

"You do?"

"Yeah. Always did I just never really had time to say it," She said, giggling softly.

Griffin laughed, along with her.

"So...Harper, will you be my girlfriend?" He asked, boldly.

Harper was surprised.

"Wow, that was bold. What happened to shy Griffin?" She asked, playfully.

To be honest, she preferred Griffin when he was shy and would get flustered at the little things she did like remove food from his mouth.

"He went on a little break. So?"

"Hmm...I don't know," She started.

She saw Griffin's face turn into disappointment. She laughed before she said her answer.

"I'm kidding. Of course, I would love to be your girlfriend," She said.

"Really?"

She nodded.

"Cool. So...see you tomorrow?"

"You got it. Goodnight, Guitar God," She smiled.

"I can't believe you still remember that,"

"Why would I? That's kinda how I fell in love with you," She said, blushing at the last sentence.

"Well then, I guess that's a good thing you still remember," He laughed.

She laughed along too.

"I better get some sleep. Goodnight, Locker Ninja,"

"Night,"

They both ended the call at the same time. Harper couldn't stop smiling as she laid in bed. Soon after, she drifted off to sleep.
